Pros: Smells r-e-e-e-e-e-eally good after its all absorbed, moisturizes well.
Cons: Smells almost too good, making me crave chocolate. Doesn't really make marks disappear much.
The Bottom Line: Palmer's Cocoa Butter Lotion moisturizes well, and smells delicious doing it... but constantly smelling chocolate is almost too tantalizing for me.

| mrs-j's Full Review: Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Lotion |
As the lucky owner of dry, itchy skin, I have a large collection of lotion all throughout my house. I seem to collect certain things in excess: cheap sunglasses, lotions, body washes and hair products. So when I happened upon Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Lotion at a local Wal-Mart on sale, I of course picked it up.
About Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Lotion
Palmer's lotion is manufactured by the E.T. Browne Drug Company. Palmers claims that their lotion will heal, soothe and protect dry skin. The back of the bottle also claims that this vitamin E-enriched cocoa butter formulation "smoothes and blends" marks and scars. In fact, this lotion is recommended for pregnant women to help stave off stretch marks.
Ingredients: Deionized Water, Cocoa Extract, Glyceryl Stearate, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Coconut Oil, Mineral Oil, Stearalkonium Chloride, Cetyl Alcohol, Cocoa Butter, Palm Oil, Petrolatum, Dimethicone, Fragrance, PEG 8 Stearate, Methylparaben, Tocopheryl Acetate, Propylparaben, CI 19140, CI 15510
Directions and Warnings
Palmers recommends that you apply this lotion "as often as needed" and that you use it anytime you need to moisturize. They recommend using this lotion after a bath or shower, or after being exposed to sun, wind or cold weather.
There are the usual warnings on the bottle that this product is for "external use only" and that it should be kept out of reach of children and shouldn't come in contact with your eyes.
Using the Lotion
I use this lotion mostly after baths and showers as an all-over body lotion, particularly on my legs, arms, chest and torso. The lotion is thick and smooth, and has a pale cream color. It smoothes into my skin quickly and dries quickly, not leaving any sticky residue.
About the Scent: The scent is one of the most unique things about this product. Since a primary ingredient in the formulation is cocoa butter, one might expect to smell a bit like chocolate when they've used the lotion. I have found that the scent doesn't remind me of chocolate as I'm applying it. It's a little too sweet and off-putting.
However, about five minutes after application, once the scent has died down a little bit, I definitely smell the chocolate smell. This is a problem. It makes me hungry. It makes me want a Hershey bar. Badly. I struggle through it. I don't think I've ever used a product with a scent that was a little too heavenly.
The first time I used this lotion was in the evening after a bath. I got into bed that evening and my husband sat up with his "alert impression of our dog" face that always makes me laugh. He started sniffing the air with this puzzled expression on his face. He sniffed his pillow. Picked up one of our cats and sniffed him. Then he sniffed me. "Aha! It's you!" I laughed, "Yes, it's me." He smiled and said, "You smell like a little mug of hot chocolate." He likes the scent as much as I do, but like me, finds that it makes him want Hershey products...
How Well The Product Works
No matter how good this product smells, it's a lotion not a perfume. So how well does it work? well, I find that my skin is definitely more moisturized with it than without it. My skin itches less and it looks healthier. The claim that it "smoothes and blends" marks and scars isn't really one that I buy, however. Call me a skeptic but the marks and scars all look the same, even after many months of use. I do not yet have the legs of a Cosmo cover girl. (Course it would take a lot more than the "marks and scars" disappearing to do that.)
The product lives up to almost all of the company's claims though, and I love that it makes my skin feel silky soft and smooth.
Cost & Where to Buy
As mentioned earlier, I've found Palmer's Cocoa Butter lotion at the local Wal-Mart. I haven't found it at any grocery stores near me, but it is also carried by CVS and other large drugstore chains. You can also purchase this item from drugstore.com. The 8.5 fl. oz. bottle retails for between $4.50 and $5.00.
Summary
If you like the smell of chocolate and you want smoooooth skin, I highly recommend this lotion. Be forewarned however, if you are a devout choca-holic with uncontrollable chocolate cravings, you might find the delicious scent of this lotion tormentingly pleasing.
