Pamela's Irresistible Chocolate Brownie Mix - Ooey Gooey Gluten Free Brownies

Written: Dec 19 '07
Pros:Gluten Free, Easy to Make, Good Taste
Cons:Pricier than regular brownies
The Bottom Line: Gluten Free Brownies!

Out of all the gluten free bakery mixes that I have tried out to make treats for my son, I have to say that Pamela's Products makes our favorites. So, when it came to send in a treat to school for my son's 7th birthday I turned to Pamela's products for a gluten-free treat for the children to enjoy.

Mixing up some Irresistible Chocolate Brownies

Pamela's mixes are actually sold in my regular non-specialty grocery store, in their organic section. The mixes are bagged and sell for around $5 a piece. This mix is gluten free, and largely dairy free. There is a disclaimer in the ingredients that the chocolate chunks "may contain traces of milk protein from the equipment", which I decided was acceptable for my son since he is on the gluten and casein free diet by our choice and not due to an allergy. There are 2 sets of instructions to make the Irresistable Chocolate brownies: using butter/margarine OR Oil. There are also recipes on the bag and the Pamela's website using this mix to make: egg-free brownies, low fat/oil-free brownies, mocha brownies, ultra-rich brownies, or to make your brownies using a waffle maker.

Making the Irresistible chocolate brownies took just a few minutes to mix together the mix, oil, water, and egg in a bowl and then pour it into an 8" square pan. They bake for 18-20 minutes on 350 degrees and make your kitchen smell heavenly. Once the time was up I took the pan out for them to cool and noticed that they still seemed to be a little "wet". Figuring that after letting them cool they would be fine I went on to do my merry business. About an hour or so later I sliced up the brownies into 2" squares - which gave me 16 brownies.

After making these I just had to try one before sending them off for the school kids and teachers to eat. They smelled and looked great, but only taste would tell. My daughter and I each had one and they were pretty much just like any other brownie from a mix would taste. Perhaps just a touch more bittersweet than fudgy, but very chocolatey and satisfying. I quickly boxed them up and we drove them over to the school because otherwise I would have wanted to eat more than just one.

I would absolutely purchase Pamela's Brownie mix and recommend this mix to others looking for a yummy gluten free treat. The only negative about it is that at $5 for a mix of brownies, that is on the high side. However, high prices and gluten free tend to go hand in hand...
