| jdhauer's Full Review: Pampered Chef Baking Basics: Egg Separator 1167 |
My morning breakfasts are rather boring these days and rarely vary. I make an omelette using two egg whites, some fresh spinach, a handful of chopped mushrooms and some chopped tomatoes. They're prettty filling, low in calories/Weight Watchers points, easy to make and good for you.
They also leave me with a couple of egg yolks every day which I feed to my miniature schnauzer puppy, Barkley. Barkley loves getting the egg yolks with his morning kibble and you can see the results in his glossy black coat. There's nothing like a well-bred, well-looked after miniature schnauzer from a reputable breeder. My goodness, he's just a handsome little dog who will be show quality if he stays within the size range for the breed standard. He's a big boy who's going to be tall - no extra weight on him and I keep a close eye on that!
Since I'm separating eggs daily, I felt it was worth it to invest in a better egg separator than the two I already had. One is just to pour the eggs back and forth from egg shell half to egg shell half. This works well if you manage to always crack your eggs properly. I normally have at least one little helper in the kitchen who wants to help crack the eggs and their small hands aren't experienced enough yet to master that task. I also had a Tupperware egg separator that my mother received for free as a door prize at a Tupperware party. These egg separators are regularly packaged in the bags of 20 giveaways that consultants can purchase from the company. They are about the size of a 1/4 cup Tupperware measuring cup and simply have slots on either side. It's very small and not the most effective.
As part of my hostess incentives for having a Pampered Chef party, I chose to use some of my free merchandise credits to purchase the Egg Separator and I'm glad I did because this product really works. It's made of stainless steel and can easily go through the dishwasher without worrying about rust. The Egg Separator consists of a single rod which has been twisted into a coiled funnel on one end and a handle (with a notch to hang it on a bowl) on the other.
I really like being able to hang the Egg Separator over my glass Pyrex measuring cups to separate the eggs from the whites. I grew up never breaking eggs directly into a mixing bowl because you never know if you'll get an egg with blood spots or one that has gone bad. You might have to throw out all of your ingredients instead of only one egg. The whites simply slip into the measuring cup while the yolk stays in the coiled funnel. The notch may not work on thicker mixing bowls but it's been fine with the various bowls/measuring cups in my house.
I've never experienced any issues with eggshells in my eggs using this product nor have I to date broken a yolk using the separator. With the Tupperware product, I regularly broke yolks, making use of the product moot.
You could use this product as a whisk if you wanted, but I usually just use a fork to whip up the eggs quickly. The handle isn't the most comfortable so I wouldn't want to whisk with it for very long. If I'm making sauces or batters, I will break out an actual whisk for that.
The other use I've found for this product is in fishing out poached eggs. My dad loves poached eggs so I find myself making them for him when he visits us. My ladle leaves too much water around the egg while I often drop the egg back into the water using a slotted spatula. The Pampered Chef Egg Separator easily allows me to drain the poached egg without breaking it.
Ordinarily, I wouldn't purchase an item like the Egg Separator but I use it every day and have found it to be a useful kitchen item. My weight is going down eating the omelettes and my dog has a gorgeous coat. I've been able to get rid of a piece of plastic (the Tupperware egg separator) from my kitchen too!
