| ariel10575's Full Review: Pampered Chef Baking Basics: Medium Scoop 2540 |
Once I started getting into Pampered Chef products and gadgets, I started looking into the scoops. I come from a family that was all farmers, so the idea of going to a store and purchasing cookies, cakes, cupcakes, etc, is not only foreign, but it makes me feel like I am cheating. After years of the tried and true spoon and knife method of dropping cookies onto my cookie sheet, I decided I wanted to try a scoop, and see if it makes the job any easier.
To assist in this matter, I enlisted the help of my good friend, and former Pampered Chef Consultant, Denise. She happened to have the Medium Scoop, and was happy to let me borrow it for some baking. As a second part to this test, I used the same size scoop my mom had purchased me at about the same time from a local discount store, and put them to the test.
Results:
I found that while both yielded the same size scoop, the cheap one, being made of mostly plastic, had a tendency to get dough stuck inside and not just come out when you press the handle. I also had no idea what sort of metal is was made with either. I gave it 3 stars.
The Pampered Chef scoop released dough when I wanted it, and did an all around good job. This time, I knew what I was dealing with, as I had already knew from my friend and her product information guide that it was made of Stainless Steel, which also means that it will not rust.
The true test for me was to squeeze out a full sheet of cookies, and see how my hand felt and how long it took to do it. After using the cheap one, my hand hurt! It was tough to squeeze, and while I went faster than the old spoon and knife method, I do not like pain.
Then I picked up the Pampered Chef model, and whipped out a sheet full even faster. It was easier to squeeze, and did not take as long also because it didn't stick as much! I knew what product to buy!
So at the next show I could purchase something at, that is what I did. I have been a satisfied owner ever since! Since then I have used it for melon balling - well, watermelon only, chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin cookies, apple cookies, blueberry mini muffins, lemon mini muffins, sugar cookies, another strange chocolate mint cookies that didn't really work because I messed up the recipe, and various other cookies and muffins and the like that I have made. I even used it for cupcakes, but I think I need a larger scoop to really get that more exact. But whatever I have used it for, it does the job, does it well, does it fast, and looks like new with just a simple trip to throught the dishwasher or quick warm soapy bath and wipe in the sink!
How big is this Medium Scoop anyway? Any other features to know about?
This scoop is 8 1/2" long, and about 1 3/4" in diameter. It can hold about 2-tablespoons or 1 oz in volume. (Volume is courtesy of the Use and Care Card) This is good for mini muffins, meatballs, and cookies. You can use it also for anything else you want to be round, or to just portion out.
It is also good for either left or right-handed use. This is nice since I'm still not sure which hand my youngest son favors yet.
What about clean up? It is easy as it can go right into the dishwasher!! Or you can give it to my son, and he can lick the cookie dough out!
If you do purchase it, like I did, you will find a card in with it that has the use and care instructions. This one came with Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies. Not my favorite, but it might be yours!
I have also used it to fill the barrel of my cookie press, and I plan to use it soon to help fill the icing bag to decorate my son's birthday cake!
My Recommendation
I do not know about your kitchen, but I think that if a tool can be used for many things, then it is a keeper! This one is a keeper in my kitchen. I have yet to go for the Small or Large Scoop, but I just might do that in the future. Right now, I'm keeping my Pampered Chef Medium Scoop ready for action. Halloween and Christmas time will be here before too long, and I plan to be baking cookies with help from my trusty friend, the Medium Scoop!
