I am ending my Epinions.com hiatus by making my first Epinion in over 3 yrs. What better than writing a batch of reviews on my new found joy; Pampered Chef products. This is review #3 of 5.
I have to admit, I belong to the Pampered Chef 12 Step Program, as in "My name is Stacy and I am a Pampered Chef Addict." It all started with one stop at a Kitchen Show to appease a friend. I planned on ordering just one item, but upon opening the catalog, I heard angels sing as I viewed kitchen gadgets that I never knew existed, yet suddenly realized I couldn't live without.
This review is on the Pampered Chef Oven Mitt, item #1326 in the
Pampered Chef catalog.
From the Catalog:
"Extra Long double-thick mitt protects hand and arm from oven heat. 100 percent cotton. 15 inches long. Machine washable."
Sight and Feel:
The Pampered Chef Oven Mitt stands up to it's claim of being exceptionally thick at almost 1/2 an inch in it's thickest parts. It is also quite soft and sturdy feeling with a tight 100% cotton terry knit. The color is a peachy oatmeal and has a loop on the end to allow for hanging (which is an advantage since the mitt is rather large). I purchased this as a companion to my Pampered Chef Oven Pad, and I am glad that I had the chance to compare them.
When I first tried on my Pampered Chef Oven Mitt, I noticed that it was comfortable and I really liked the length. It went further up my arm then my other traditional mitt, so I felt that I was more protected when removing items out of the oven. It fit snug, but not too snug and the feel of the terry inside of the mitt resulted in a comfortable wear. I washed my mitt prior to use and after it finally dried (more on that later) I noticed that it had shrunk quite a bit. It is still around 15 inches in length,
but it is much more snug around the hand. Not uncomfortable so, but it is not something my husband, or anyone with larger hands would be able to use.
Why Is This Better Than the Other Oven Mitts?
After comparing my Pampered Chef Oven Mitt to my other more traditional mitts, I have found that even though there are a few negatives, I much rather prefer the Pampered Chef version. Due to it's thickness, I have no concern of any heat seeping through to my had when I pick up something hot. This allows me to casually stroll from oven to counter, a luxury that I did not previously have. I also really appreciate having my arm protected in those moments that I need to reach deep within in the oven, like
for example when a hot baked potato rolls to the back. The quality is outstanding and although my traditional oven mitt wore down significantly over time causing it to be very unsafe, I don't see that happening with my
Pampered Chef Oven Mitt. Like most other Pampered Chef products, it comes with a great guarantee, this one being for one year.
Care and Handling:
The Pampered Chef Oven Mitt can be washed without worry right along with your clothes in your washer and dryer. Just wash in cold on the gentle cycle. Use only non-chlorine bleach and tumble dry low. On the label it states that for best results one should line dry.
My personal experience is that I have not noticed any problem with washing the Pampered Chef Oven Pad with the normal cycle and because of it's thickness, I have to dry on normal temp a few times (just toss it right back in with the next load to dry if I am doing more than one).
Any Negatives About the Product?
The Pampered Chef Oven Mitt is NOT made of flame retardant material. Although I feel safe using it in my kitchen, I would never use it near any open flames like on a barbeque.
I would not recommend this product to anyone who has large hands or only likes the feel of loose fitting gloves. If you do have large hands, please read my review on the Pampered Chef Oven Pad at: http://www.epinions.com/content_178700586628
I am also concerned about the
color. I like it for looks, but that is only if it lasts. Because the color is so light, I am sure after another year of use, it will start to look dingy and stained.
