I am going to begin my review with a little survey? (Trust me, there is a reason for this!) How many of you have been invited to a Pampered Chef party? Okay, now how many of you didn’t want to go, but went so out of kindness for the hostess? Or because a good friend of yours drug you along! Or, if you didn’t go you might be the only one in the neighborhood that didn’t go!

This may be how most feel, but … I feel a bit differently. If the timing is right, I have no problem going to a Pampered Chef party. I love to look at all the kitchen gadgets, eat the great food prepared and … have fun with friends! So what’s my problem? I literally have most of the items sold. (This is what happens when you’ve been a hostess twice!) I find myself sitting at the party searching through the catalog …

Super Scraper … have it!
Oven Mitts … have them! (yes, plural)
Deep Dish Baker … have it!
Food Chopper … have it! (and love it!)
Apple Peeler/Corer/Slicer … have it! (and the stand too!)
Bar-B-Boss w/ Sleeve … have it!

Whoa … wait a minute! What’s this Bar-B-Boss thing? Now I don’t have this! Hmmm…


~ So what is this bar-b-boss thing? ~

Yes! As you may very well have assumed, this is when I purchased the Bar-B-Boss w/ Sleeve. And when I came home that night from the Pampered Chef party, I quickly flung the catalog towards my husband and informed him that I had purchased a present for him tonight! I should have seen the sly smile form on his face, as it has become primarily a present for me. But hey, that is another review all together! :)

So what exactly is this Bar-B-Boss? Well, my definition would be that it is a handy dandy tool for my barbecuing needs! What does Pampered Chef say?

Barbecue lovers united! This multipurpose tool flips burgers, pierces sausages, slices meat and opens bottles.

This is not your ordinary spatula. First off, it measures in at 17 inches in length, with the spatula portion being a good 5 ¼ inches long, and almost 4 inches in width (approximately ½ inch shorter in width at the top). The spatula area of the Bar-B-Boss is made of stainless steel. Yes, upon your first glimpse you will note that this is not one wimpy spatula.

While the spatula area is made out of stainless steel, you will note that the handle looks just as durable. It is made out of one heavy-duty plastic that has not, over the years, faded, broken when dropped, or even gotten the least bit warm when working by the grill. I have also found this handle to be very easy to grip and have had no complaints with it slipping from my hand while in use. (Okay, so I live in a warm climate. This is important to me!) :)

Hopefully by now you have gotten the message that this is one durable barbecue spatula. But wait, there’s more! I am going to give you a description of the many multipurpose uses this Bar-B-Boss has. I will begin with the left side of the Bar-B-Boss, work towards the center of the spatula, and then finish on the right side.

~ it slices ~ This has probably been the most used feature, other than the spatula part itself, that I have used. The left side doubles as a knife and I can not tell you the number of times that I have used this feature to check and see if my hamburgers and chicken are thoroughly cooked. I have not used this to slice meats, but would assume that this would work well as it is fairly sharp. I should note here that this spatula is sold in the Pampered Chef catalog as the Bar-B-Boss w/Sleeve. The sleeve is a plastic cover that can easily be placed on the spatula portion, and removed with ease. This is a great feature for those of us with children in the house, and … for those of us who tend to poke through our drawer (without) looking for the spatula and cut ourselves! I have been told that if this sleeve is lost, another can be ordered from your Pampered Chef consultant.

~ it opens ~ Yes! Heading up towards the handle of this Bar-B-Boss is a bottle opener. How handy is this? My original thought when purchasing this handy tool was that my husband could have a beer while doing the cooking. And while that does happen sometimes, this feature also works nicely for opening up a wine cooler! :) Okay, it also works well on opening up those other bottles that need a bit of assistance!

~ picks it up ~ I really love this size of this spatula. I have found it to work perfectly when cooking with steaks, hamburgers and even salmon on the grill. Located in the center of this spatula are three oval shaped openings. This helps aide in the draining of excess juices while cooking. Just another great feature that I really like about this Bar-B-Boss.

~ it pierces ~ We are now looking at the right hand side of this spatula. With six odd looking spikes on the top portion of this spatula, it does a look a bit odd. Have I found this useful? Yes! I have used it to tenderize my steaks and have also used this side to turn my hot dogs, bratwurst and kabobs to a different grilling position. As noted with the knife side, this piercing feature is also sharp and should be kept out of the hands of small children!

While I have heard that the Bar-B-Boss is dishwasher safe, I hand wash mine after use. As I write this I can hear several of you asking me why? Gosh … I’m not really sure why I do this, as I generally love to throw as many items into the dishwasher that I can. I guess that I just want to give a little tender loving care to my Bar-B-Boss?


~ Do I have to go to a party to get one? ~

If you really hate to go to parties, then I have some good news for you. Try visiting the Pampered Chef website at www.pamperedchef.com. You can have fun shopping while in the comforts of your own home. Heck! You can even sign up for a gift registry. But I should note that they will connect you to your local Pampered Chef consultant to place this order. Maybe this isn't as great as I first thought!

But for those of you who don’t mind going to the party, you may want to host one yourself. Why? The rewards! I have hosted two parties and have brought home a couple of hundred dollars of free kitchen goodies! Was it worth it? Yes!


~ Do I think that you should have one in your house? ~

Of course I think that everyone should have one of these in their house. That is, if they like to grill out! I paid $18.00 for my Bar-B-Boss w/Sleeve a few years ago. It still looks like new and has been a very essential tool in my grilling out adventures.

While I have read a few reviews that mentioned perhaps the handle on this Bar-B-Boss should be longer, I have had no problems with it’s length. I do try to grill our meats on a lower setting, so perhaps this is why I have not experienced the same problems.

So the next time you are invited to a Pampered Chef party … don’t cringe! Just look up item #2662 (Bar-B-Boss) and hand over your order. You won’t be disappointed! And if you already have one, why not get one for another member in your family. I seem to remember my Mother commenting aobut this spatula while grilling out the last time she was visiting. Christmas is not that far away …
