Ever since I was old enough to help make cookies with my mommy, I found I disliked measuring out one ingredient. Every time I found it yucky, difficult, and sticky. What was it? Why it was shortening - white fat that is needed to make my cookies so good, and cheaper than just using sticks of butter. My mom insisted upon using it, but I know that we both disliked using our standard stacking measuring cups to measure it. The worst part of it was getting it out of the cup once it was measured. I usually had to use that cup again later for other dry ingredients, which mean having to get it washed with Dawn, and dried, and ready to go again. Ick! I may have been a girl, but I HATE to do dishes!
Now, skip ahead to the present day. I decided that I needed money, and was selling enough Pampered Chef products to friends on behalf of other consultants that I should cash in too. In my kit came along this 2 cup measuring cup called the Measure-All® Cup. Seriously, I wasn't sure how to use it. I gave up after a while, and put it away.
About a month later, I went to my first meeting with other consultants in my director's director's group. At this meeting they had a product demonstration. The consultant demonstrated how to make one of the newer recipes in our seasonal cookbook, and to my delight she showed me how to use several of the products new to me, and how to really use the Measure-All® Cup. Ever since then, I have been hooked on that recipe and this cup!
What makes this thing different?
I'll tell you what makes it different!
(The features list is almost all from Pampered Chef materials they provided to me in hard copy, not online. All commentary is my own, or taken off the product itself.)
Holds up to 2 cups (250 mL): Not just dry ingredients either! Liquids and solids can be measured in this cup!
Lists Standard and Metric Measurements: Yes, if you happen to be in a part of the world that uses metric, this will be good for you! You can also measure dry/solid ingredients in up to 48 teaspoons and 16 tablespoons. With liquid ingredients, you can measure them also in ounces as well as the same amount of teaspoons and tablespoons.
Plunger!!: This is the coolest part of it! When you use the dry/solid side, just turn the filled cup over into the container it is going into, and pop the inner cup up to the top of the outer sleeve, and BAM! You have just scraped all the sticky honey, shortening, peanut butter, corn syrup, or even mayonnaise out of the cup! You can just scrap the flat surface of the inner cup against the container or scrape it with a spatula, and you are good to go! Nothing wasted! Woohoo!
2-Way System: I was confused about this for awhile, and with the help of one demonstration, I solved my problems and problems other friends have had with this product! I thought that I needed to remove the inner cup and flip it over to the other way to use it. Duh! You do not do that! You just flip the whole thing over to which ever way you want to use it. If you want to measure dry, put it where you can read the red side, with the inner cup as an upside down cup. If you want to measure liquids, put it so you can read the blue side, with the inner cup as a regular cup. And if that did not explain enough, you should do what I failed to do, and read the directions on the cup itself!!
Pour Spout: Yep, just put your liquids in the inner cup and once you have the amount you want, just pour it out. The pour spout helps direct it to the right location, as well as helps you find the right part of the cup to have in the up position.
Red and Blue Writing: I list this as a feature as it stands out and helps show you which way is for what.
Dishwasher Safe: I just take mine apart, as the inner cup comes off without much problem and goes back in no problem. Put both in the dishwasher - top rack please - and you are good to go. I've read on my use and care guide to only wash the inner cup by hand to insure a tight seal, but I have had no problems. But if you are paranoid like I am sometimes, you may want to go ahead and keep it out of the dishwasher.
Use and Care Guide: With your cup will be a Use and Care Guide. It lists a lot of helpful information, including tips for using it. On the flip side is a recipe for Chocolate Cluster Cookies.
Exclusive!: This product was designed, patented, and produced in the USA just for the Pampered Chef. Funny thing is that I've seen this same design, but with a yellow inner cup in use on the Food Network Super Show - Good Eats - with Alton Brown. He has said that he plans to sell his cup on his Website in the future, but I doubt that that will be ok unless he makes a special deal. I know he has given props to Tupperware (which led to my purchase of the colander that he uses on his show), but I've heard no mention specifically of this one. Time for me to check his Website again I think!
Anything else I should know?
Well, do not put this product in the microwave. And you should not use with boiling liquids. I admit it; I have used it to measure boiling water for gelatin. I think that they are nervous about changing the shape, and warping the inner cup. The more I think about it, the more I feel kind of worried about the way that I have treated mine.... maybe I should take better care.... nah!
I have also found that each product will be a tad different from another. It does change with the more you use it too. Because the inner cup is pliable, it will loosen and change with use. It used to be difficult for me to adjust it for measuring dry/solid ingredients at first, and I needed to use a twisting motion between the outer sleeve and the inner cup. Now after nearly 10 months of use, it is not as difficult, and I can just pull it straight down.
Oh, and because the plastic inner cup is prone to warping, do not use strong detergents or steel wool to clean it. That would just be, well, bad for it obviously.
My Recommendation
If you do cooking with sticky, gooey things - get this cup! It is fun, easy, and at least for me I get the satisfaction of a self-cleaned measuring cup, and no waste left behind. I like this cup and use it as often as possible, but still probably not as much as I could. I'll just have to keep trying more I think!
I do recommend that you take a look at it at the next Pampered Chef show that you attend. See how you like it, and hopefully it will have a place in your kitchen too!
