Pros:safe for non-stick cookware, can both mash and mix foods with it
Cons:not strong enough to mash white potatoes, doesn't replace my potato masher
The Bottom Line: This item is a nice idea but it really isn't practical and doesn't replace my trusty potato masher.
My sister recently hosted a Pampered Chef party so I felt obligated to go. I was tired, I didn't have any extra cash to buy anything, and I knew there were going to be screaming children there. Any one of those reasons would normally be good enough for me to bail. It was my sister, though, so I simply explained to her that I would show up for a bit and partake of the sangria, but I probably wouldn't be there for long nor would I be placing an order. She assured me that it was fine and she would just be happy to see me for a bit.

After browsing through the Pampered Chef catalogue and checking out the various gadgets that the consultant brought along, I was unimpressed with almost everything that I saw which made the whole non-ordering thing easier to bear. I was intrigued, however, by the Mix and Chop device which I thought would be great for breaking up and browning chopped onions, ground beef/turkey, etc. My sister told me that she'd add it to her order for me... and three weeks later she received the Pampered Chef Mix 'N Masher for me. She ordered the wrong item for me which was understandable given the similar names. Oops.
About This Product
The Pampered Chef Mix 'N Masher is designed to do what you'd think: it mashes and mixes things. Instead of having to dirty two utensils, you can both mash and mix things like potatoes, whole canned tomatoes, etc. with this handy little device. It is made of nylon, is suitable for non-stick pans, and is dishwasher-safe. This Mix and Masher costs $10 and can be purchased through consultants at parties or directly through the Pampered Chef company web site.
Despite the fact that I received the wrong product, I was still excited to try out this Mix 'N Masher when I decided to make mashed potatoes. The whole thing was a disaster because the potatoes weren't cooked long enough. I mashed them with this thing but they were full of hard lumps, so I then used the immersion blender which turned the potatoes into a slimy glue. It wasn't pretty.
The second time I tried using this Pampered Chef Mix 'N Masher was on sweet potato chunks that I had boiled for my parrots. I drained the water and easily mashed them up (in their skins) with this product. I always add a bit of plain yogurt, some peanut butter, a splash of orange juice, and some spices like cinnamon, cayenne, nutmeg, etc. I liked the fact that the potatoes readily smashed up and then it was easy to mix in the other ingredients with the same utensil. I didn't have to use a potato masher and then switch over to a wooden spoon because I had this Mix and Masher. It was also easy for me to scoop the final mixture out of the pot and into storage containers with this gadget.
I tried to make regular mashed potatoes for the humans a few more times using Yukon Gold potatoes and ensuring that I cooked them thoroughly, but I still was disappointed with this Pampered Chef Mix 'N Masher. No matter how much time I spent trying to mash up the fully-cooked potatoes, they still had a fair amount of lumps which is something that I don't normally experience with my trusty Mr. Chef Nylon Potato Masher.
As far as I'm concerned, this Pampered Chef Mix 'N Masher utensil is a disappointment. It works well for mashing and mixing the sweet potatoes that I often cook for my parrots, but it simply isn't strong enough to mash thoroughly-cooked white/yellow potatoes. I like the idea of only having one thing to clean up, but what's the point when I still need to follow it up with another potato masher and then a mixing spoon? I have limited kitchen storage space and I simply don't see a reason to replace my regular potato masher with this Pampered Chef gadget. I won't throw this thing away, but it will probably collect dust in an unused drawer in my kitchen somewhere. It isn't a must-have item.
