You may or may not know that I have spent the bulk of this summer potty training my youngest child. I knew what I was getting into since I have two other children and they were trained by me. I dreaded this task of training because I knew it would possibly be a war of wills and I knew that some mess was inevitable. I knew that I was going to need some sort of absorbent undergarments including a “Pull Up” type of diaper for nighttime.
Just in case you have no idea as to what a “Pull Up” is, it is basically a pull on diaper. The sides are elastic and that helps children (and parents) pull the undergarment up and down like real underwear. Also, the elastic sides are easily ripped open in case of a bowel movement, and this makes cleaning it up much easier for everyone. It is worth mentioning that I don’t really like pull on diapers. I think they tend to confuse a potty training child and I think that potty training is hard enough on their little psyches. Bottom line, for me to endorse a pull on diaper is a big deal because I tend to think of them as a necessary evil.
I came to the choice of Pampers Easy Ups because of a coupon. Pampers knew the age of my son because I had signed up for mailings at their website and I guess they also knew it was time for him to be trained. I had some previous, limited experience with Huggies Pull Ups and I honestly thought they all were the same. I was frankly surprised that it took Pampers so long to come up with their own version of the pull on diaper, but I’m sure some patent was the blame.
Armed with my coupon and bit of determination, I headed for my beloved Target store and bought a $10.99 “jumbo” package of 28 Easy Ups for my small son. With a $2.00 off coupon, I thought this was quite a deal. More coupons were to follow and that was my main incentive for buying the Pampers brand. My last purchase was a “Mega” pack (54 total) of Easy Ups at about $17.00 (after coupon) and since we use only one per day, er night, the pack should last me almost two months (potty training is also economical).
~YEAH! IT’S ELMO & FRIENDS!!~
One of the first things my son noticed about Easy Ups was that one of his favorite pals, Elmo was on some of the “underpants.” He adores his furry red pal of Sesame Street fame and I thought right away that this was a good sign that he will not resent wearing them.
Indeed, every night he is excited to see which of his favorite Muppets will grace his sweet bottom for the night. It might be Cookie Monster with a birthday cake, Elmo Snorkeling or Ernie waving hello. You just never know. The pictures really are cute and the theme of that particular picture carries on to the back side of the Easy Ups. For example, the picture of Elmo snorkeling on the front, shows little fish on the back.
~HERE’S THE FACTS~
Pampers Easy Ups come in three different sizes that, like all diapers, are based upon a child’s weight. The chart looks like this (info from www.pampers.com:
Medium ~ 22-35 pounds
Large ~ 30 pounds and up
Extra Large ~ 37 pounds and up
Part of the sizing is dependent upon the way your child is shaped, of course. My son is a petite fellow at less than 30 pounds at almost 3 years of age and he wears a medium. Easy Ups fit him snuggly, but not uncomfortably.
One of the bragging rights at the Pampers web site is that Easy Ups “feel” more like real underwear. Do I believe this claim? Maybe. There certainly isn’t a plastic feel to them and they don’t make a bunch of “diaper noise” when my son walks in them. The padding inside is not especially thick, so I guess I can say that sure, they feel like underwear if you compared them to a regular Pampers diaper.
~ABSORBENCY?~
I am fortunate in that my son wakes up most mornings dry. Easy Ups are my insurance policy for the rare morning that I find some urine in one. They save me from the hassle of changing sheets and cleaning up urine mess. I have found that indeed, the Easy Ups hold a night’s worth of urine without any trouble. I don’t keep one on my son all day long, but I think these types of pull on diapers are not designed to absorb as much urine as a regular diaper. Pull on diapers are meant to be an aid for potty training and not meant to completely substitute a diaper.
~FINAL RANDOM THOUGHTS
Can I claim that Pampers Easy Ups are any better than their Huggies counterpart? Not really. My initial purchase was based on saving money, but I will stick with the brand because they not only meet my requirement of nighttime assurance, but also they thrill my son with Sesame Street characters. Both brands of pull on diapers are priced about the same and so I don’t feel like I am paying out anything extra for a cute product that my son seems to enjoy.
