The Bottom Line: Easy Ups are definitely more absorbent than Huggies Pull-Ups, but for me the Huggies Disney characters, and the Easy-Open sides edges out the Pampers brand.

I should first say, I'm not a huge fan of pull-up type diapers, as I don't think they actually encourage toilet training. In fact, in some cases they might actually delay the process. Initially, children might be persuaded out of diapers because the character designs on these type of pants are intriguing; however, the absorbency is so efficient it doesn't allow children to feel wet, thus, why would kids want to use the potty. In my case, real underwear, potty incentives, and lots of patience trained my boy. This type of training pant has been a godsend for nighttime wear, so on we go with my review.
Easy Ups training pants are the 2nd stage in the Pampers training pant series. They have a 3-step process called Toddler Transitions, which goes as follows:
● 1st Step – First Steps starts kids with their first pull-up.
● 2nd Step – Easy Ups are pull-ups that introduce wetness indicators.
● 3rd Step – Feel 'n Learn Advanced Trainers are pull-ups with wetness indicators, and a wetness liner.
Easy Ups are diapers that pull-up like underwear. They feel less like a diaper, and more like cloth. In comparing them to the Huggies brand, the Easy Ups are softer, and are more cloth-like. They aren’t as crunchy either. You know… the crunchy sound diapers make when kids walk? These pants don’t make much noise. In fact, most people would think your child is wearing real underwear except for the scent, and the added cushion. All pull-up pants have stretchy sides, waists, and legs that hold tight to the body to stay on. Like the Huggies pants, Easy Ups have leak-guard protection as well. They also provide more padding than the competitor’s pants. Easy Ups have tear-away sides that are not re-sealable. Thus, if the sides tear, one needs safety pins to salvage the pants. On the other hand, the Huggies brand features Easy-Open sides that re-seal.
What makes the Easy Ups a training pant? The training part comes in with teaching your child how to pull-up, and pull-down their pants like real underwear. These pants also feature wetness indicators that fade when wet. Children are supposed to be encouraged to stay dry otherwise the little designs outside of the pants fade. Huggies Pull-Ups have learning designs on the inside as well, so when children sit on the potty they can actually see the designs, as opposed to the outside designs that are only seen by others.
The first thing I notice when opening a new package of Easy Ups is the smell. Just like the diapers, the training pants have a baby powder scent. I’m not sensitive to smell, and I don’t have allergies, but this odor bothers me. The Easy Ups training pants are unisex, and they feature Sesame Street characters. There are two designs: Elmo brushing his teeth, and Elmo and Zoë roller-skating. The trim is green, and blue and the pants are truly asexual.
One of the things that might be unique to the Pampers brand is that they size their diapers and training pants. This may not hold much interest to small families, but for daycare providers, and those who have several children in a household wearing diapers, and, or pull-ups it’s nice to have the sizes printed on the back. Easy Ups training pants are available in jumbo packs, mega packs, and in economy-sized pack. The amount of pants varies by the size of the pants, and the packaging. Following is the current sizing chart:
2T-3T = 22 to 35 pounds
3T- 4T = 30 to 40 pounds
4T-5T = 37 pounds +

Our Experience:
My first gripe with Easy Ups is the smell. What’s the point of scented training pant? Is the smell supposed to mask the odor of poop? I don’t think I have to be the first to tell you that they don’t do that, so why add ingredients that have the potential to cause allergies for those who are sensitive? Secondly, the tear-away sides are horrible. I don’t like pulling down the Easy Ups, and dragging poop all over my son’s backside and legs. To tear-away the Easy Ups you have to get a grip, and rip. Pampers have improved the tear-away sides over the years, and now they are easier to remove, but they are also easier to tear when stepping into them, and in the motion of pulling them up, and in pushing them down. In addition, tearing the sides isn’t always the easiest thing to do when you have a squirmy toddler with a full load. Sometime the load flies away with the tearing action. I kid you not. Huggies Pull-Ups have Easy-Open side that re-seal. They are much more convenient especially in the beginning stages of toilet training.
It seems like everything today is male, or female, pink, or blue, and so on. I happen to be an artist, specifically an interior designer, and I don’t associate color with gender. Huggies claim that their pants provide customized protection to the genders, and therefore the reason for two designs: Toy Story for boys, and Disney Princess for girls. My son goes out of his way to find the Woody pants over the Buzz Lightyear’s, although he adores the Cinderella movie, so he would be just as comfortable in the “girl” pants. The designs on the Easy Ups don’t do anything for my boy, so he’s not influenced one way or the other. I’m in favor of the character designs, but I actually like the idea of neutrality. Why not feature Toy Story with Bo Peep to appeal to the girls, or Blues Clues, which is all together gender neutral. Does everything have to be either “boyish,” or “girly”? Sesame Workshop, and their logos are trademarks of Sesame Workshop. They put the proceeds they receive from the sales of their products back into Sesame Street and its projects for children. If you want to support the show, than purchasing Easy Ups is an easy way to do that.
Price has not been an issue as I generally purchase this type of product discounted at Costco; however, sometimes Target offers them on special, or I'll receive a Pampers coupon, which makes a difference. I think the principal distinction between the two brands is the difference in absorbency, and in the removal. Easy Ups are definitely more absorbent. I rarely have an overnight accident with Easy Ups, while I’ve had many with the Huggies pants. I have to monitor my son’s liquid intake when he wears Huggies, yet I don’t worry with the Easy Ups. That said, I actually prefer the Huggies Pull-Ups Training Pants. For me, the Easy-Open sides make all the difference in the world. Plus, my son likes the Disney characters over the Sesame Street designs.
