Pros: Definitely a good concept, my son likes the spiderman pattern.
Cons: Only one size, Spiderman wouldn't have been my first choice.
The Bottom Line: Worth a try if you are potty training and looking to help increase awareness for your child.

I feel as if I have been potty training my 3 1/2 year old son for years now. We first embarked on the potty training journey around the age of 2, when he began to express curiousity. Unfortunately that curiousity was not long lasted and back to diapers we went. My little boy is Autistic and Speech delayed, so the expressive language challenge has been our biggest barrier when its come to completing potty training. He understands what to do, but realizes it and recognizes it when its too late. The good news is that huge leaps have been made and we are oh so very close - Hooray!.
One big problem we've had here is that they make diapers so absorbant these days that they take all the wetness away from your child's skin. This is a good thing, when it comes to diapers. But, when it comes to potty training - its a setback. Why give up the convenience of peeing in a diaper with no interuptions from playing with your favorite game or watching your favorite movie? Peeing in the potty is clearly over-rated.
I found that with other disposable training pants, like Pampers Easy Ups or Huggies Pull-Ups and the Huggies Convertibles Diaper-Pants, these were basically just glorified diapers. While they pulled up and down, making going potty easier - they also absorbed all wetness just like a diaper. So, I tried putting my son into big boy undies which then resulted in 100 loads of laundry, pee in the carpet, etc etc etc. I've even tried cloth diapers and soaker underpants - with definite success, but I was still looking for an easier solution. Then, I saw them... Pampers Feel 'n Learn Advanced Trainers.
About these training pants...
I purchased these at a local Wal-Mart at $8.48 for a package of 26 (jumbo size). What I noticed immediately was that there was no choice of sizing for these training pants. They are made to fit 26-40 pounds (12-18kg), so my 36 pound 3 year old qualifies.
Feel 'N Learn Advanced Trainers come in 2 choices - Pink or Blue. The Pink "girls" package have Dora the Explorer patterns, and the blue "boys" package features Spiderman & Friends. Our package has 2 patterns - either Spiderman or Incredible Hulk. The patterns aren't extremely bright or obnoxious, and don't show through clothing. Personally, I prefer the gender neutral Elmo design that Pampers offers with their Easy Ups training pants but the pattern is not a deal breaker. My son is definitely attracted to the Spiderman & Incredible Hulk designs but I'm the fuddy duddy. My son doesn't even know who Spiderman really is, has never seen it (and won't be seeing it anytime soon), he just seems to think that he looks cool. Hey, it works for me. I do think that the choice of Dora (on the girls pkg) is more age appropriate than Spidey & friends for the target market here of (approx) 3 year olds.
What makes the Feel 'N Learn Advanced Trainers different than other training pants out there is that they have a special wet sensation liner that helps kids feel the wetness and become aware of their bodily functions. The liner is designed so that it lets the wetness through for about a minute or two before it pulls it away from their body (like other diapers do). The only way to describe it is that it looks like the diaper has an extra strip of material inside it, like a pantyliner (I know I know). The liner has little "rain drop" designs on it - I have no idea why. So, just like wearing real "big boy" briefs these let you know you are wet, but they have none of the mess, 100 loads of laundry, or soiled carpets that goes with it. Definitely a bonus! I could see these as being very useful for kids going through nighttime training, though just as useful for the basic training (which is where we are at!). Like many other training pants out there, these also feature small patterns in the front which change color/disappear when they are wet - to indicate the training pants need to get changed.
Feel 'N Learn Advanced Trainers pull up and down just like other training pants, specifically they are nearly identical in design to Pampers Easy Ups. The training pants are made of this very soft paper material that is almost cloth-like. They don't crinkle or bunch and are very comfortable. There's elastic around the leg openings and around the top to prevent leaks. They are made to fit trimly, so larger kids may have a problem with these. The upper limit is 40 pounds and I can certainly see that pushing it. Pampers may want to consider coming out with a larger size of these, especially since they are meant to be a final step towards potty training. These are absorbant enough to be worn pretty much in place of a diaper - my son has even slept in one overnight with no leaks.
So, do they work?
Well, we are still in diapers/training pants here. But, we just started with these this past week. And, I can most definitely say that these are a big help for my son. I really like that he can feel the wetness right away but that he isn't sitting in wetness (like he would with cotton underpants). If you've sworn away other training pants for the reason that they are basically diapers that tend to stall potty training - then look no further and try these out. They are more convenient for me than cotton diapers or soaker underpants, and priced comparable to other training pants from leading brands. If you like Pampers Easy Up Training Pants, then you will certainly like these. According to the Pampers website these make their official release in August 2004, but my Wal-mart and local stores are already carrying them. Frustrated and potty training? Go try a pack of these, they just might do the trick for you.
