| JustReg2's Full Review: Pampers Feel 'N Learn Advanced Trainers |
For those of you who have children you know that potty training is the beginning of independence for your little one. Our 28 month old daughter has been interested in the potty for the past month.
We began our quest to train her right before her 2nd birthday, as her doctor needed a urine sample for tests. We were successful with getting the sample, but she showed no interest in sitting on the potty daily. So....we put the thought out of our minds, bought another package of diapers, and let it slide.
We tried special "big girl underwear" to try to motivate our daughter. Shrek2 undies, Wiggles undies....nothing interested her. A couple months went by and we bought "another brand" disposable training pants, and we have been successful getting her to urinate on the potty a few times a day with one or no accidents.
Our only problem is, she won't tell us when she has to go. I received $9.00 worth of coupons from Pampers (2@$2 and 2@$2.50 for their training pants line) and decided to give them a try. I purchased the Feel 'n Learn Advanced Trainers in the hopes it would help our daughter feel what it is like to have an accident, without making a mess around the house. Hoping that she wouldn't like the wet sensation in the training pants, she would learn to tell me when she would have to go. Nice concept, but it didn't work.
The Good
Packed 26 per package, with cute Dora design (Spiderman for boys), I found this product at our local Wal*Mart. I was lucky to get my hands on the last package of the "girl" style (there were plenty of the boy style available) on my shopping trip. The package cost was $9.44, comparable to Huggies Pull-Ups.
The trainers come in two designs per package. Dora Waving, and Dora with Back Pack. The Dora Waving design has Flower Wetness Indicators, and the Back pack design has Butterfly Wetness Indicators. These indicators fade away when the toddler urinates. Additional decorations cover the back and front of the trainer in the Dora The Explorer Theme. In case of a solid waste diaper, the sides can be opened at the seams. The waist band and legs bands stretch to your baby's unique shape. These disposable training pants are thin, but thicker than Huggies Pull-Ups.
The Bad
While it's a good concept "to let her feel when she's wet", this did not matter to my daughter. When she was wet, she didn't care, or tell me. These training pants fit toddlers 26-40 pounds. Our daughter, at her last checkup weighted 38 pounds. I asked a Wal*Mart associate if they carried the "next size" and was told "This is the only size they come in". These trainers are snug on our daughter and extra care must be taken when we take them off or put them on as not to tear them. If your child is close to the 40lb range, do not buy this product...they will be tight.
The Ugly
When I noticed that the Wetness Indicators had faded (meaning she urinated), we went to the bathroom to change her. Her bottom was wet and red. She was developing a rash from the wet pants against her sensitive skin. I'm not exactly sure how long she was wet, but it was less than 30 minutes, as I check her often and take her to the potty a lot. In a very short time the rash on her bottom had developed. She has always had a sensitive bottom, so your results may differ. I don't know about you, but the idea of making my child "suffer" with a red and sore bottom to get her to "learn" that she needs to use the potty isn't my idea of positive potty training. We're back to using Huggies, and she receives rewards of stickers, mini M&Ms, and small toys when she is successful. We do not punish her or yell at her when she has an accident.
Final Thoughts
Successful potty training is a joy for everyone !! Take cues from your child to see if s/he is ready to train. Does your child show interest in the potty? Is s/he interested in the bathroom when you are using it? Does s/he tell you when he has soiled his/her diaper? If so, it's time to try. Just remember to keep it positive. Accidents will happen, but accidents are a learning opportunity.
I can not recommend Pampers Feel 'n Learn Advanced Trainers because of our negative experience with them. My daughter's sensitive skin broke out in a rash quickly after urinating in these pants. Having my daughter uncomfortable and in pain is not worth it. I would rather the training process take longer than to have her uncomfortable in wet training pants.
