| mmcphee's Full Review: Pampers Feel 'N Learn Advanced Trainers |
Boys are definitely different from girls when it comes to potty training. I am so done changing diapers, unfortunately my son isn't done using them. My mother bought us a pack of Pampers Feel n Learn Training Pants because she seems to have had enough of diapers as well.
Diaper? Underwear? Both? Make no mistake, call them what you want, Pampers Feel n Learn Training Pants are diapers. Instead of having Velcro tabs that stretch around from front to back these diapers go on like underwear. Kids step into them and up them go. Our boy pack features an oddly proportioned Spiderman in two different poses on the front.
Also on the front are wet indicators. These friendly looking spiders are light blue when the diaper is dry and disappear when the diaper is wet. Of course the theory is kids will want to keep these diapers dry so they can see the spiders. My son likes to see that he has made "Miss Spider" disappear. That is the only part of the diaper that interests him, because at 3 he has absolutely no idea who Spiderman is.
Running down the inside center of the diaper is a strip that is supposed to stay damp after a child wets. This feeling of wetness is supposed to be uncomfortable and make the child want to use the potty. My son knows wet when he wears real underwear but if he feels that sensation with Feel n Learn it must be fleeting because he never mentions it. On the bright side, no rash despite the fact the strip is supposed to stay damp for a few minutes.
The fit is snug. We have him in the 3T - 4T size, 30-40 lbs. And since he is 40 lbs I'm not surprised these seem snug and a bit short. And unlike the diaper they resemble in so many ways, they do not hold the wetness like a diaper. All the elastic is where it needs to be, the waist and legs, but it doesn't take much for my son to end up with a leak. There does not seem to be as much super absorbent polymer in Pampers Feel n Learn Training Pants as in traditional diapers. We do not let him wear them to bed unless for some reason one of us wants to strip his bed and clean his mattress in the morning.
And as for "other" messes, these diapers do have easy tear away sides so you aren't pulling a mess down and getting your child to step out of it. Unfortunately, since there are no tabs, there is no way to roll up the diaper and associated mess and secure it. This is a huge drawback to Pampers Feel n Learn Training Pants.
Final Thoughts As far as I can tell, these do nothing to make my son want to use the potty. The wet strip does nothing to motivate him, which is supposedly the reason for buying Pampers Feel n Learn Training Pants in the first place. These are just diapers that look like underwear, but they do not protect as well as underwear. For an outing with a child is mostly trained these can save an embarrassing and uncomfortable accident. As a potty training tool they do nothing.
Note: This review was written last June but somehow got lost on my laptop. I am happy to say that we took a break from potty training for a month and then I had him trained it 3 days!
