| marytara's Full Review: Pampers Premium |
Oh no! Not another diaper review, right? Yep, right. I must say that I have tried almost all the disposable diapers out there and we keep coming back to Pampers Premium. Honestly, I believe that Pampers Premiums are the best diapers you will find from the supermarket diaper aisle. You may find that one of the off brand diapers is a suitable alternative. But, if you're anything like myself you'll be back to the name brand after a short period of time.
I am very pro-coupon. I use coupons almost every time that I go to the store. I like to save money and see the dollars get subtracted off of my final total at the grocery or discount store. Pampers are made by Proctor & Gamble who put out many coupons for their products. It is not uncommon to clip coupons for Pampers in the Supplement section of your Sunday paper. You can also sign up to receive more coupons at the product website www.pampers.com. They start you off with $10 worth of coupons just to put your name on their mailing list. If a few people in your family, or friends do this for you its a quick and easy way to get lots of coupons for Pampers products. Once you are on their mailing list, every few months you'll receive high value coupons (usually $1.50 off or more) for Pampers products. With smart shopping and combining sales with redeeming coupons, Pampers diapers are competitively priced (and often cheaper) than the generic diaper which sits next to them on the shelf.
Diapers that are always CHANGING
Pampers diapers just get better! Since I've been using them Pampers has made modifications to their line of products, including this diaper. The most recent changes (in Feb '02) were to the names of the different sizes.
"Swaddlers"
-N/Newborn for 0-10 pounds (with cutaway notch for umbilical area)
-Size 1 for 8-14 pounds (if your baby is big start here)
-Size 2 for 12-18 pounds
"Cruisers"
-Size 3 for 16-28 pounds
-Size 4 for 22-37 pounds
-Size 5 for 27+ pounds
-Size 6 for 35+ pounds
Currently we are using Pampers Premium Custom Fit "Cruisers" diapers in Size 5. My son just hit 27 pounds and we recently moved into the 5's. According to the weight chart he could still fit into a size 3, and definitely is within the range for a size 4. Diaper sizing is a bit wacky as the weight ranges overlap. Since my son is a big boy and has been since he was born I've had better luck moving into the larger sizes sooner than later. You'll know when its time to move into a bigger sized diaper as you'll most likely start to experience leaks and blowouts more frequently.
Reasons I like Pampers Premium?
Reduced Rashes
Pampers Premium have a really nice soft clothlike cover. There is no crinkly plastic cover which is akin to wearing a plastic garbage bag. The cloth-like cover that they use is very breathable and for us its help reduce the frequency of diaper rashes.
In addition to the clothlike cover they also have a built-in layer of lotion in them called "Gentle Care Lotion". This lotion is visible in a couple little vertical stripes along the inside of the diaper itself. The lotion transfers off the diaper and onto your child's skin. Despite its presence, we still use additional diaper cremes and lotions. But, in a pinch there is a small amount of lotion on these diapers as well.
Pampers premium also have an Absorbant Core. This core draws wetness away from your baby's skin and private parts and into the diaper. You'll know its working because the diaper will get quite puffy. When you take it off, it will weigh quite a bit but still be dry to the touch.
Great Fit
The fastening system on these diapers is the best I've ever used. Pampers Premium uses Velcro tabs combined with a sticky tape. This means that the diaper stays on (and is tricky for little ones to remove). But, its also good because it can be resealed (for parents "peaking inside" and resealing after).
In addition to the great fasteners these diapers have Stretchy Sides (in size 3-6). This means you can get a tight but comfortable fit that is "custom" for your baby. Some of the other brands left horrible elastic gather marks on my son's chubby thighs, which I didn't care for. It seemed like in order to get the diaper on tight enough at the waist it was way to tight at the legs. With Pampers Premium this is definitely not the case. Because of the stretchy sides, you can adjust the diapers to your baby's changing needs. If you need the diaper a little looser around the legs but tighter around the waist you can do that. If the opposite is true and you want it looser on the tummy but tighter around the thigh, you can do that too.
Its so important that your child's diaper fit right. Diapers that are too big or too small will result in nasty blowouts, leaks and messes. With these diapers its easy to get a good fit - which means less blowouts. They are ideal for overnite or when you are out for a few hours at a time. Many of the overnite or premium diapers are quite bulky, but Pampers Premium are not. I would classify them as a "Trim" diaper, they fit good and are not bulky. Even on a little chubby baby.
Availability
Because they are a name brand they are available at most supermarkets and discount stores. This just makes them more convenient for us on a day to day basis at home, and as well as when we are traveling. No running around trying to locate a store that sells the exact brand and size. Pampers are carried pretty much every place that sells diapers.
Pampers Premium are also sold in a variety of packaging sizes ranging from a convenience pack (small package), to a jumbo package (about a weeks worth of diapers), Mega-pack (approx 2 weeks), or a bulk box (a month or so). My mother likes to buy them in bulk boxes at a local wholesale club.
Some Perks too
Recently Pampers held a promotion which offered free Fisher Price toys in exchange for "points" (UPCs) from their products. This program has just ended but during that time we received many quality toys (and have some that were back ordered on the way!). Since we love Fisher Price toys, the Perks program just gave us another reason to choose Pampers over a generic or competitive brand.
Sesame Street!
Around the waistband of this diaper are Sesame Street characters, bright colors. I know its seems silly. But I'd rather have Elmo, Big Bird, or Ernie on my kids diapers than Barney (which are on luvs). So for me, the Sesame Street characters are a plus.
And last, but certainly not least, Quality of the product Despite some cosmetic changes and renaming of their sizes, the diaper quality remains the same - Excellent. On one occassion we did get a bad batch of diapers (the tabs were defective). I contacted the manufacturer and they sent me several coupons for $5 and $6 dollars off of future packages.
Overall
This is our all-around disposable diaper of choice!
