adamandsherry's Full Review: Pampers Swaddlers Diapers, Size N (Up To 10lbs), S...
I gave birth to my third child a few weeks ago. I was taken for the third time by how tiny newborn-sized diapers really are when my husband pulled out the first teeny, tiny Pampers Swaddler from the bassinette in our hospital room shortly before our second son made his grand appearance. There aren't a lot of choices when it comes to newborn sized diapers, and the Pampers version is as good as any of the others offered.
The Package
Each Jumbo package of Pampers Swaddlers newborn sized diapers contains 40 diapers. Given the number of diapers a newborn goes through each day (if your kids are like mine, that would be 8 to 12), it's a bit of a joke that they refer to 40 diapers as a quantity worthy of 'jumbo' status, but that may just be me. The 40-diaper package is yellow and green in color, and features a photo of a mom with her young baby. (To be fair, some stores offer 92-count packages that come in a green and yellow box that features the same basic design as the 40-count package, and 240-count boxes are available from online retailers including Amazon.) To open the 40-count package, simply rip along the perforated end and remove a diaper.
The Diaper
Newborn-sized diapers are intended to fit babies weighing ten pounds or less.
Each diaper is made of a very soft cottony material that feels great against your - and baby's - skin. The front of each diaper is adorned with a colorful drawing of a Sesame Beginnings character (eg, baby Bird Bird or Elmo). The decoration is a cute feature if you have a summer baby who often goes diaper-commando; otherwise it's likely to be hidden under clothes.
The inside of the diaper features an "Absorb-Away Liner TM" that efficiently keeps most messes from escaping the diaper. The liner is essentially a set of fitted elastic bands that go around each leg to hold content inside.
Finally, the absorbent area inside the diaper is made of a soft, mesh-like material, and has a baby powder scent.
The Cost and Availability
Diapers are expensive, and newborn sized Pampers Swaddlers are no exception to this rule. Although prices vary widely depending on the area and retailer, I paid about $12 for a 40-count package at my local supermarket just yesterday. There are almost always $2 to $5 off coupons available, though, so keep your eyes peeled for those. A seller on Amazon offers a 240-count box for about $36; watch out for shipping charges.
Performance
We've had just two blow-outs this go-round, so Pampers Swaddlers are doing their job for us as advertised. They fit my son's little body perfectly and aren't bulky like some diapers we've tried with our other children in the past. He currently weighs a little over nine pounds and they still fit well, so the weight recommendation seems on target. They're also very soft and it's nice to hold him and feel that softness. My husband is particularly fond of the baby powder scent, and chooses Pampers over other brands strictly for the smell.
Downside
Ironically, something about these diapers irritates my son's skin, leaving him quite red in the diaper area. I don't know if it's the scent or something in the materials used to make them, but his sensitive skin can't seem to handle wearing Pampers for long before it becomes irritated. It's really a shame, because otherwise - cost aside - we love these diapers.
