| buysalot's Full Review: Panasonic PT-42PD3-P 42 in. EDTV-Ready TV |
This is a review of the Panasonic TH42PWD4, which replaced the 42PD3P at the end of 2001.
I purchased this 42" Plasma HDTV set from DVDT for $5499.00 plus $299 for a table stand and $169 for shipping. They shipped quickly through an air cargo service that made an appointment for delivery, and ait arrived in good shape.
I have now been using it for about a month, hooked up to Dish Network satellite TV, which has two HDTV channels in use now (Showtime and HBO). Also part of the system are a progressive scan DVD and SVHS VCR.
Replaced was a 35" Sony glass tube set (non-XBR) which is the TV I will be comparing the plasma set to in this review.
I am very happly with the Panasonic TH42PWD4. The picture is considerably brighter, the colors and blacks very saturated. The flat screen is perfectly illuminated from edge to edge, and the resolution is much much better than my old set. The set is silent, generates little heat, and is a lesure to set up and move compared to the 275 lbs of the old set. I truly believe plasma sets will take over the market totally on the high end anyway.
My only complaint so far is having to switch cords in and out. There are both 1 standard video input, and 1 SVHS input, but they cant both be used at the same time. There is also one component video input- I wish there were two or three of these as all HDTV stuff will be coming with these. I also have not had a chance to try it with a computer so I don't know how it's resolution would compare to models like the Sony which have a higher native resolution.
I am happy with the dealer DVDT, an internet retailer, who shipped the TV quickly and safely. Too bad the 50" model is double the price.
