Pros: Versitile HD,DVD/R & DVD/RAM recording. Real time DV/mpeg2 encoding for complex, high speed scenes.
Cons: No optical 5.1 surround inputs. No firewire for file transfer to PC.
The Bottom Line: This machine is a great first step but the addition of 5.1 optical surround inputs and firewire file transfer to PC will be fantastic!

| richardsd3's Full Review: Panasonic DMR-HS2 (40 GB) DVD Recorder |
If you have been waiting for the first truly versitile Optical Video Recorder, this is it. My first DV/HD transfers went perfectly, along with dubbing to DVD/R & DVD/RAM. The DV from your camera is automatically broken down into individual scenes for rearrangement later on the HARD DRIVE. The device is very complex and requires some reading to understand proper editing, recording and playback sequences. I have only used about 50% of the capablilties of this device.
The instruction book failed to explain that the newly dubbed HD/DVD-R requires finalization (in a different portion of the instruction book) when the screen goes blank. Otherwise, the instructions are fairly clear. Some DVD-R dubbs were dropping frames near the end of the 2 hours in SP mode.
The audio inputs lack an optical "surround" for recording 5.1 Dolby. This is a severe fault in that more and more HTV HBO movies are transmitted in surround and will not pass video without the optical iput from the htv receiver.
