Pros: lens, zoom, image stabilizer, flash, screen, RAW format, manual focus, all-manual operation

Cons: larger than most, no optical viewfinder, noise at ISO 400 too high for 8x10 prints

I was a big fan of the FZ20 (leader of the ultra-zoom 5MP cameras) and this is a great improvement on its predecessor. While image quality is about the same, the higher resolution, RAW format and MANY improvements to the body and features make it well worth the upgrade.

Panasonic has a winning entry in the "pro-sumer" field with the FZ30 -- any photo enthusiast who wants a solid, classy, and flexible professional camera with 12x zoom, external flash, and all-manual control will be pleased.

This is not a Digital SLR -- but it's as close as you're gonna get in terms of features and quality for under $1000, and without all the bulk!
