| bsauter's Full Review: Panasonic Sonic Max ES 8023SC Electric Shaver |
I've owned a lot of shavers over the years and the Panasonic Sonic Max ES 8023SC Electric Shaver is by far the best I have ever used.
I do not shave with a blade at all. Never have and I'm too old to start now. Using this Panasonic with it's wet shave capability makes me think that this must be what it's like to use a blade. I have never felt a shave so close!
This is a linear shaver that you can use wet or dry. I use it mostly dry for a fast, close-shave get away in the morning. Every now and then I treat myself to a wet shave with lotion for a super close shave. I have found that if I skip a day shaving that the wet shave will take care of my heavy growth very quickly. With my old shavers it was torture to shave after skipping a day.
This unit is very easy to clean. They just recommend running it under water and putting a dab of anti-bacterial hand soap on it and suds it up. The mesh foil is easy to remove and clean or tap out whiskers. Ergonomically it is very comfortable to use. The push button on/off switch is excellent.
The big drawback for this unit is the mustache, neck shaver. It does not cut as nice as my old Panasonic. It will take several passes on my neck to get rid of the longer hair. While it is usable, it can stand some improvement.
The charger is a base charger that you set the shaver in. I do not mind the chargers design as I keep it on the counter and just place the shaver back in when I am finished. But...it you tend to move around your charger a bit (such as for traveling) it could be a little flimsy and awkward. It would also be easy to knock the shaver out of the charger if you hit it. I do like the fact that it is not a charger brick that you plug into the wall. I have a tendency to leave those in the hotels when I leave. I like having a base unit that I can put right in the middle of the counter to remind to take it back home! The batteries will not give you much warning if you forget to charge the unit. I have used it for several days at a time but when the batteries die they go in a matter of seconds so be prepared to charge it again or go with only half a face shaved. Luckily it has a fast recharge time and only a 5 minute refresh for completing a shave.
I feel that you can't go wrong with this shaver. I have used Norelco, Wahl, older Panasonics and Remington and this unit is by far the best I have owned.
