| darrenk11's Full Review: Panasonic Sonic Max ES 8023SC Electric Shaver |
I choose to use an electric razor because of their relative ease of use, and to help protect my sensitive skin. Plus, I'm never awake enough in the morning to trust my face to a wobbly arm and a sharp object. After using a Braun Flex Integral for several years, the batteries were pretty much shot, and I decided it was time to get a new razor. After reading several reviews on the Panasonic line of cordless electric razors, I decided to try this model, as I found it at my local Wal-Mart for about $80.
As soon as you feel this razor, you can tell that it is a well-built unit. It has a very solid feel, not overly heavy, but not just a little motor and some batteries either. As soon as you turn it on, you can tell that the motor is different than in other shavers. Rather than a chugging wobbly sound and feel, the Panasonic has a nice high-pitch, low vibration action to it. The motor is almost impossible to bog down, and it is relatively quiet as well.
For normal dry shaving, I found it pretty easy to get a close shave, though its about the same as with any electric razor-- you kind of have to work at it a little bit to get a close one. You won't have a single pass extremely close shave. I felt that I could achieve a closer shave with the Panasonic than the Braun razor, but the Braun is better at handling longer hair. If you like to shave once every few days, the Braun's are good at mowing down longer hair. But, if you shave daily or every other day, the Panasonic will work great.
The main advantage of the Panasonic is its wet use capabilities. I wasn't sure that I believed the claims, but I do now. I have run the razor many times directly under the shower head and haven't had any problems. I have set up a mirror in the shower, and now I do a quick shave while I'm in the shower. With some cleansing shave gel you can get a very comfortable shave plus help your skin out in the process. Plus, you don't have to worry about leaving little hairs all over the place either. To further validate its waterproof claims, the charging system uses an inductive charger that allows the razor to be charged without having any holes for power going into the unit itself.
Cleanup is a snap using some hand soap and running the unit under the sink. The little Braun cleaning system is totally negated by the fact that you can just run the Panasonic under water and achieve the same thing.
The main benefits of this razor are its wet/dry capabilities, the linear motor which works quite well, and the overall build quality of the unit.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone to give it a try. At $80 this is a good value, and will compete with the top offerings from Norelco and Braun.
