| jiwhite's Full Review: Panasonic PV-D4752 DVD Player / VCR Combo |
Although we usually watch DVDs, we still occasionally watch VHS tapes. We had been discussing buying a DVD/VCR Combo to replace the VCR in the armoire in the bedroom so that didn't have to go out to the livingroom to watch DVDs since these units originally appeared on the market. We purchased our Panasonic PV-D4752 Progressive Scan DVD/VCR Combo at Ultimate Electronics for about $275. MSRP is $329.95. We considered the competing, less expensive Phillips unit that they also had, but decided that we wanted to go with the more reliable Panasonic brand for such a complex piece of machinery. We also purchased an extended warranty at the time, but we have not need to take advantage of it.
Features
This combo unit has both a DVD and a VCR in about the same space as a large VCR. The VCR is 4-Head Hi-Fi Stereo. The DVD player supports DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW and MP3 formats and plays 1 disc at a time. We mostly use it for DVDs, but this unit is perfect if you only have a limited amount of space for AV equipment. Video output is in component video, composite (RCA) and S-Video. Video features include progressive scan, frame still, hi-speed smooth motion scan (up to x100), and repeat mode. Audio output is in digital optical and Toslink digital audio output. The front input A/V input jacks make it convenient to show your home movies. This unit provides simulated surround sound and is home theater ready. It can provide on screen display in English, Spanish or French. There are separate controls for the VCR and DVD on the face of the unit.
The remote is multibrand and can control multiple electronics. The primary difficulty we have had is that the remote is not backlit and has many buttons, so we have to turn on the lights to operate the remote effectively. On a very minor note, the remote tapers toward the top, so we tend to pick it up upside down.
Bottom Line
I highly recommend the Panasonic PV-D4752. It has been very reliable as both a VCR and A DVD player with excellent audio and video output. We have had no problems playing any of our VHS tapes or DVDs and have been very satisfied with the output to our 27" Panasonic television. The remote is complex, but workable.
