Pros: Car Kit, long battery life
Cons: Skips, locks up, no ID3 tag support, no VBR support, poor owner's manual
The Bottom Line: Panasonic should be ashamed of themselves! This unit is unreliable at best. Poor MP3 compatibility problems plague this unit. Take my advice and avoid it.

| guitarzan's Full Review: Panasonic SL-MP50 Personal CD Player |
I purchased this CD player a few days ago and I'm going to send it back for a refund. I bought it because it seemed to be good quality (based on the specs) and had a long battery life compared to other players. Actually,I found out later that the battery life when playing MP3's is about half the battery life when playing normal CD's. This player looks really cool in the pictures. When you get it in your hands, it feels very cheap, with cheap buttons and volume knob, has a small useless display, and doesn't even have a line output for connection to a stereo system.
MP3 Compatibility
This CD player claims to be MP3 compatible. That's only partially true. It plays certain MP3 files okay, but if you have any files recorded at a high bit rate or with VBR (variable bit rate), you can forget about those. VBR MP3's tend to cause the unit to go crazy. The music jumps up and down, and sometimes stops playing altogether. Higher bit rate MP3's have caused my unit to lock up for some reason. Then you have to stop the CD and start it again, which results in a big delay while the unit counts all the tracks. Also, the unit tends to skip frequently, when playing certain MP3 files. I'm assuming it has something to do with the MP3 files themselves, but the same MP3 files play fine in my car MP3 CD player (JVC KD-SH99), as well as my computer.
This unit has been a waste of my time. Poor quality cheaply built unit, poor owners manual. Panasonic needs to go back to the drawing board on this one. There are several units out there with more features for less money. It was nice of them to include car accessories, though.
