Pros: Quick 30 Second Skip, High quality option, web enabled communication, no monthly fee
Cons: Hardware not upgradeable- yet
The Bottom Line: I recommend the Replay TV with out hesitation but please read the "not recommended" opinion of ClassAction to get a clear understanding of the ShowStoppers Hardware limitation & Panasonic.

I bought the showstopper from a web site and ended up paying $399 for it (8/00)- and it is awesome. I opted for the ReplayTV for two reasons- 1) a CNET radio personal highly recommended it and 2) no subscription fees! I'm not much of a TV fan but the few shows I watch I really appreciate! I couldn't justify paying an additional 9.95 a month on top of my cable bill for the 3 hours of TV I watch every week. & Now with my Showstopper, I just set it up to record the few shows I do watch and leave it alone! And in case I forget or there is a special on, I can just log into my.replaytv.com and instruct my recorder at home to record a show/game for me! That?s something TIVO also doesn't have! I can quickly skip through commercials on recorded shows with the 30-second skip option and practically watch the show straight through without interruptions, and I waste less time in front of the TV- typically cutting a 30 minute show down to 20 minutes.
I was also very worried about the viability of the company. I took a chance and it paid off. I primarily based my decision on Marc Andreessen (a Netscape founder) who was on the board of Replay TV and I believe an investor in the Company. And just yesterday (02/01/01) Sonic Blue (formerly S3) bought replay TV- giving it a foundation, supporting technology, and their expertise and financial backing.
