I have the 2000 model (same as the 1000 except a bigger hard drive) and it's fantastic. It records as you're watching, so if you get a phone call you can just pause the show to answer the phone. Then when you come back, you just pick up where you left off, and you can fast forward through the commercials to catch up.
You can program it to record shows by title, subject, actors, or directors, so you could just have it record all the Alfred Hitchcock movies that come on, or every episode of ER. Then it shows you a nice menu of everything that has been recorded and you just pick and choose what to watch without having to find it on a tape. If you are recording a show and you come home in the middle of it, you can just start watching from the beginning, and it will continue to record for you.
It updates the program guide every night with a local phone call from most places, and it also provides software updates as they are released. Unlike Tivo, there is no additional fee for the service.
Setup is very straightforward, only a little more complicated than setting up a VCR. The menus are very easy to use.
