| ideagirl's Full Review: Panasonic PV-HS1000 (20.4 GB) 20-Hours Video Recor... |
When I first heard of the concept of ReplayTV I thought, as many do, that it was a fancy VCR. Nothing could be farther from the truth. It's strength lies not in the ability to set a timer to record, but in the way it records what you tell it to. As much as I hate to admit it, it did change the way I watch television.
I choose not to have cable service or DSS, which leaves me with six piddly broadcast stations of varied quality. I only watch a couple of shows each week (not counting Seinfeld reruns), but the shows I watch I am married to. I admit it--I am a slave to X-Files and Judging Amy. I'm not so slavishly connected to Jerry S., but I could be if my life starts slowing down...
That's because Panasonic's box gives you the option to record all episodes of a given show with the click of a button! It also offers in-broadcast freeze-frame and instant replay (c'mon, sports fans, don't tell me you wouldn't kill for THAT action!). During the Survivior series, I found myself freezing shots from upcoming episodes trying to figure out who would get the boot next. It was also nice to know that if I came home late on Sunday, I wouldn't have to wait six months to see the first half of the latest Mulder adventure. This unit also gives you the option to jump through commercials in roughly two minute leaps, without any of that fast action dizziness you get from a video tape. This feature alone has brought me pure, unadulterated joy...
Although you can output any recorded program to a hard drive to do with what you might, I have yet to find a use for that feature. For the time being, I am content to know if I can't sleep I can always catch up on Judging Amy.
