I have curly hair and have a layered cut so that I have soft curls all over my head. If I let my hair grow past shoulder length, my hair looks bad - first because I've let it grow without getting cut/trimmed, it's dry and frizzy (especially in the summer). Second because the curls are weighed down by the weight of my grown-out hair. So I'm trying to keep it trimmed, every 5 to 6 weeks. This keeps my hair looking its best.
At times, my curls seem tired. They border on wavy instead of the soft curls that they are meant to be. I was in the drugstore about a month ago looking for a new hair product (I don't think I mentioned that I'm about as addicted to hair care products as I am to cosmetics!). I noticed that Pantene, a product line that I've had zero luck with in the past, has changed a lot of their products, changed the packaging and added new products. The first thing that caught my eye was this Volumizing Root Lifter Spray Gel. Because the price was only $3.99, I decided to give it a try.
Product Details:
Volumizing Root Lifter Spray Gel comes in a nearly 7" tall plastic bottle with a pump spray. The bottle is the same shade as most of the Pantene products - pearly off-white. The pump spray is the same color and has a clear cap over it.
Pantene claims that this product:
*Gives flat hair a jumpstart with added texture.
*Penetrating Pro-Vitamin formula helps protect against damage while styling.
*Adds energizing shine and control for lush, healthy-looking fullness.
There is 5.1 fl. oz. in every bottle. This is enough for at least a month of daily use, if not longer.
The scent of this product can best be described as a fruity floral. The look of the product, if you unscrew the pump spray and take it off, is a clear, thin liquid. It is not thick like a gel product.
Ingredients (taken from packaging):
Water, PVP/VA copolymer, polyquaternium-4, benzyl alcohol, isosteareth-20, DMDM hydantoin, disodium EDTA, fragrance, panthenol, panthenyl ethyl ether, octyl salicylate.
Directions (taken from packaging):
Use on wet or damp hair. Do not rinse out. Spray liberally all over hair before styling. Apply directly to roots for greater volume. Dry thoroughly, flipping hair upside down for volume.
My Experience:
The last few days before I tried this product, my curls seemed limp to me. I always use a curl-boosting spray (either L'Oreal Pumping Curls, John Frieda Frizz-Ease Dream Curls or FX Curl Boosting Spray), but felt like my curls needed another type of boost. So I was excited to try this product and was hoping that it would really lift the hair at the roots.
My routine is to wash and condition my hair daily. I then dry my hair and apply a bevy of haircare products. I wasn't used to spraying anything on my wet hair, but I have to in order to use Volumizing Root Lifter Spray Gel.
I spray this product liberally all over my hair and comb it through, making sure my roots are covered. I then blow-dry my hair, scrunching as I go along. I don't turn my head and hair upside down because I feel like I get enough volume without doing so.
The first thing I noticed while using this product is that it adds texture. I don't know how to describe texture except to say that it has a lightly treated feel - and I mean that in a good way. Almost like it is very lightly coated with something that is going to make my hair easy to style, and then will stay put after I style it.
The best thing about this product is that it really does add volume. It adds volume not only to my curls, but to the top of my head where there aren't a lot of curls (my layers start about one third of the way down the side of my head). This proves to me that the root-boosting claims really do work. Volumizing Root Lifter Spray Gel helps to shape and hold my curls as well. The texture that it adds also helps in this regard. Since I have been using this product, I have not had to worry about flat, limp curls.
This product may also add a touch of shine. Because I use so many other products in my hair, I haven't really noticed that this adds shine, but I think that it might. One day last week I caught a glimpse of my hair in the bathroom mirror at work and was shocked at how shiny my hair was. The only thing I've done differently in the past month is to start using this product.
I have not yet experienced frizzy hair this spring. It's only May though, and those hot, humid, 90-degree Cleveland days are coming. So I am not sure how this product helps to control frizzies, if at all.
All In All:
All in all, I love this product and am very pleased with it. It adds definite volume and body. I'm also pleased with the texture that it adds. It also has a great scent that lingers for a short while. One 5.1 oz. bottle, while it looks small, lasts longer than a month. I'm thrilled that I can spend $4 on something that does several good things for my hair!
Price and Purchasing Information:
I purchased my bottle of Volumizing Root Lifter Spray Gel at my local CVS drugstore for $3.99. I have also seen this product online at cvs.com. I think $3.99 is a great price for this product, since it lasts for over a month of daily, heavy use.
