reginahitch's Full Review: Papermate Mechanical Pencil,.7mm,Twist to Advance/...
The first time I used these papermate twisting mechanical pencils was when I was a small child. I think it was 5th grade or so. I liked them because they were different.
The twisting tip makes advancing the lead quite easy. You just twist and it comes out. Also, the fact that the lead is enclosed in the end of the twisting mechanism keeps it from falling out, which is often a problem with other types of mechanical pencils.
These pencils are fairly inexpensive, between $1 and $2 a package of two, so they fit into nearly any budget. The erasers last a long time, as well, being made of the same pink eraser material as the eraser wedges that have been a standard for 50 years. This is a step up from many other mechanical pencils that use crumbly white eraser material that doesn't work as well.
These pencils are the same size and shape of the standard #2 pencil, but the lead can be retracted into the body of the pencil, which means less breakage and less waste. They never need to be sharpened and are silent when advancing the lead. The silence can't be said about other "clicking" mechanical pencils. Because they are the same diameter as regular non-mechanical pencils, pencil-top erasers can be used on them. This feature is also a step up from cliching mechanical pencils because pencil-top erasers get in the way of the clicking of those types of pencils.
Being plastic, the Papermate Twisting-advance mechanical pencils will break. Not quite as easily as wooden pencils, but if they are stepped on or used to pry open a stubborn lunch box, the plastic body will crack and splinter. This splintering doesn't always affect the useability of the pencil, though.
I like these pencils and think they make great office supplies. I have many now, even though most of my writing is done with a word processor.
