As a person that is curious about all things paranormal, I couldn't wait to see Paranormal Activity. Commercials screamed it was the scariest movie of all time, a definite must see and it would have me on the edge of my seat. Paranormal Activity has to be seen in the theater!
Paranormal Activity has even been compared to the movie Blair Witch Project. Let me say now that there will never be another Blair Witch Project. I guess "they" meant that both had shaky, hand held camera footage. There was the colorful days and black & white nights. Both had "ordinary people" filming their every day lives. It just so happens their every day lives dealt with witches or demons.
Micah (Sloat) and Katie (Featherston) are a couple taking their relationship to the point of moving in together. It seems Katie forgot to tell Micah she was bringing along some baggage. That baggage comes in the form of a demon that attached itself to her years ago.
Micah, determined to find out what is really going on, sets up a camera in their bedroom to catch the activity that goes on at night. Once he starts with the camera he can't seem to let it go. We get to follow the couple during their daytime activities as well. But, the real action happens while they sleep.
The actors do well at portraying an average couple with an abnormal problem. Micah is very believable as the annoying, gotta protect my woman, boyfriend. He does just as well as the solid stand by my woman at all costs man. Katie portrays the emotions she feels with an edge that makes her character stand out. She's frightened, angry, confused and tired. She does all of it well. I definitely have no complaints about the acting.
Some of the decisions made by the couple were questionable. If the writer/director, Orin Peli, wants to make a documentary type movie he should have thought this through a little better. A demon expert is out of town so they just wait for him to come back? Really? I have a demon calling me his best friend I'm on the phone finding another expert. A paranormal expert becomes freaked and won't stay in your house so you go to bed and hope your boyfriend can help? Ummm...no. I'm wide awake finding out who and what I need to rid myself of this thing. No going to bed and hoping for the best for this woman.
Soooooo.... was it the edge of your seat scary movie I was expecting? No.
A few loud bangs? A few footsteps? Honestly, I have scarier things go on every day. No sudden surprises? A clock on the vcr moving at warp speed only to slow down, ticking off the seconds, gives you plenty of warning that something is going to happen. I lost count of the times I waited with bated breath for what was coming to just look at my friends and say "that was it?". I gauge scary movies by how much of it I spend peeking through my fingers to watch it. The more I "peek", the better it is. Sadly, my fingers never left the popcorn bucket. There were twelve people in the theater when I was there. After spending 86 minutes watching this rated R movie, nine strangers, two friends and I spent another 5 minutes talking about how disappointed we were.
If you are looking for the scariest movie of all time Paranormal Activity is not it. If you like watching people sleep it should be put at the top of your list.
