NathanielS87's Full Review: Parasite Eve II for PlayStation 1
Van Damme must've helped make this game, cuz it's more of a knock-off of Resident Evil series than the previous Parasite Eve. Although the mimicry at least ensures decent gameplay, PE 2 copies RE too closely.
The story is about Aya Brea, who works for M.I.S.T (an elite police unit) she must combat a corporate force that does experiments on animals by altering their mitochondria. These experiments change all life-forms into mutants of superhuman strentgh. Does this story sound familiar? Although the game becomes a personal quest for Aya, which gives it a unique flavor, the story sounds a bit dry.
Unfortunately, Square adopted the worst aspects of Resident Evil series for Parasite Eve 2: The camera and control. Although the camera isn't HORRIBLE, it is annoying when the view changes without warning while you're fighting. This gives the enemies the opportunity to deliver cheap shots. This would not be terrible if Aya didn't move as slow as a clock, which makes her turns and runs stiff, jerky, and difficult.
Besides these gripes with the game engine, PE2 shines in the fighting and challenge departments. The vast amount of weapons, magic, and armor throughout keep the fighting varied. The vast number of items to find and puzzles to solve make it challenging.
With great graphics, appropriate sound and music, solid gameplay, the overall presentation of PE2 is well above average.
