| northeastgal's Full Review: Parker Brothers Boggle |
A family game.
Table games are not as popular today as pre-computers. Some are more popular than others. But every household must have a few. They are traditional. This game is not the most popular, but for a change its fun. Its not as serious as Scrabble and you dont have to be genius to play this game.
This word game by Parker Brothers is similar to Word Find puzzles . Boggle comes with 16 letter cubes (a letter on each side of the cube), a sand timer, paper and pencils. The price is around $15.
I played this games recently with family members when we gathered for the holidays. We always try to stay around the table to talk, laugh, play and try to get the children involved. Usually we vary the rules rather than follow the rules in the instruction booklets so we can adjust according to the number of players or for variety. I dont think weve ever played any table games strictly by the rules. We set the rules to suit the group we have playing at the time to make it enjoyable and easy to understand for all.
How to play the game.
The object is to make words that other players did not make. The winning score should be agreed upon before starting the game (this can be 20 points or 100 for a longer game). This can be played with young ones (3rd graders) to adults. The more players you have the better it is. But it can last longer to reach a win. Its not a serious game but yet its challenging and competitive. It can be played with anyone that can form 3 letter words. Shake the cubes up and make words by joining letters up, down, side-to-side and even diagonally. The longer and more unusual the words the higher your score. The time for the round is 3 minutes which at times may be too long if no vowels come up on the shake of the cubes. I found the smarter you are the larger the words you are trying to make while the younger ones are making longer lists of 3 letter words giving them the opportunity to get more words and more points. Sometimes the ones with the longer words end up losing. At first I tried avoiding making the 3 letter words just for fun.
When the buzzer goes off, each player take turns reading off the list of words they wrote down and all those that have the word cross if off their list. Only the word no one else has counts towards your score.
Example of play:
Shake the cubes in the included shaker. This shows up.
B X I T
O N B M
N I T V
K O L E
I've made the following words in the 3 minutes.
3 letter words (these are 1 point each)
bit, box, let, tin, etc.
4 letter words these are 1 point each)
bite, knit, knob, tile, etc.
5 letter words - 2 points each word
6 letter words - 3 points each word
7 letter words - 5 points each word
8 or more letter words - 11 points each word.
I think staying together on special occasions is more memorable than just watching television or separating the children to play with their toys and adults drinking and having adult talk which can be done when the children are in bed. It encourages learning for the children.
