Pros: Look great, goes everywhere, and does what it should!
Cons: The cuffs would be better with elastic or fasteners.

Looks are (almost) everything, at least in the case of this Windstopper fleece jacket from Marmot.
Before I get into the technical merits of this jacket, I’ve got to gush over just how great it looks and feels. It’s cut for women, with a tapered waist that eliminates bulk if you ever choose wear it under a shell (as I often do). This is one of those rare pieces of outdoor clothing that makes a perfectly smooth transition from my life in downtown Manhattan to camping high up in the mountains and back again. I just love it.
The “Windstopper” aspect makes the jacket function as much as a windbreaker as a fleece, but you won’t ever need to worry about being too stuffy or uncomfortably warm. The fabric really does breathe well, and the “pit zips” are key. Unless it’s freezing or raining, I really don’t need anything but this one jacket!
I do sometimes wear this fleece under a shell (also from Marmot, their women’s Cervino jacket), but I learned that it’s not exactly designed for that – because the Shasta is a “Windstopper”, the company never intended it to be zipped into their other shell jackets. No matter – Marmot’s got some of the best customer service around, and when I called to ask what might be done to make these two pieces zip together, they told me to send them back and they’d replace the zippers to make them match. I did, and two weeks later they Fed Ex’ed my matched set to my door, just in time for a camping trip!
If I’ve one complaint about the design, it’s that the cuffs lack elastic or fasteners -- they’re sewn bands. If you’re in the habit of pushing your sleeves up over your elbows, this jacket won’t work for you.
It’s comfy and light, though, and looks like a million bucks. You can wear it anywhere! And like every Marmot product I’ve ever seen or used, the quality is top-notch. And their customer service can’t be beat.
