Decision ProcessOk...so I bought a bike, and started riding, and then I noticed that I was sore. And that didn't make me happy. So I went on a hunt to find some padded spandex bike shorts. Now, it's not everyday that you can pull these off; but the Pearl Izumi shorts are wonderful! I tried on a few different pairs, and finally decided on the Ultrasensor short; purchased at Dick's Sporting Goods.
Features
When looking for my shorts, I tried on a few Women's styles that were just too short. They looked trashy and seemed to ride up when I walked around. But the Pearl Izumi shorts are a more modest cut. They are longer than most other Women's brands, but shorter than a Men's style. Which I also tried. But those were a bit too long. The padding inside is great. You feel sort of silly walking around with thick padding in your crotch, but when riding, they really make a difference. I rode 25 miles the day I bought the shorts and the next day I didn't feel a thing. A significant change from the feeling I got after riding in just my running pants!
Pros and Cons
The pros are unlimited. The quality of these shorts is great! They have been washed a few dozen times and still stretch the way they did when I bought them. The elastic trim has not frayed or twisted either. And the shorts feel new everytime I put them on. They are super comfortable; both when riding and walking. The padding is just right. It's not too much, but not too little either. Makes riding so much more comfortable! The only con I can find with them is the price. They are about $60, which for cycling clothing is rather inexpensive. Some sporting goods stores make their own padded shorts, but I've found that they just don't stand up as well as the Pearl Izumi ones. So if price is an issue, try thinking more about quality in this case. The quality you are getting for your $60 is wonderful! I have only had mine for a year, but they look and feel brand new, and I don't see the quality deteriorating anytime soon.
