The best multi-purpose amp
Written: Apr 03 '01 (Updated Apr 03 '01)
Pros:Good power, distortion, reverb and quality
Cons:On the expensive side
The Bottom Line: The most versatile amp on the market. A great choice for guitarists and stringed musicians alike.
I recently purchased a Peavy Studiopro 112 from a local music shop for $275. I wanted to use it for both my electric guitar and my amplified acoustic cello. This turned out to be very hard to manage. I tried acoustic amps, keyboard amps, bass amps, and guitar amps from all the major makers. I even bought a Marshall combo amp before I sent it back because of its bad quality with the cello. Then one day I found the Peavy transtube amps that a friend reccommended to me. I brought my cello and my electric guitar to the store and tried them out. Here is what I found...
Electric Guitar (Kramer Vanguard Pro)
-------------------------------------------------------
I first dialed in the "Jazz" EQ on the Clean channel, and put a little reverb on. The sound was excellent; warm and alive just like I wanted. Next I tried the Lead channel, putting on the EQ for Moderate Distortion. I believe this is the best EQ for the amp, as it can be used for any style of music with great results. I tried the Lead channel again, this time using the Metal EQ. The amp surprised me, because it could crank out warm earthy tone using the Jazz and Blues EQs and have excellent distortion (for a combo) on the Metal and Moderate Distort EQs. The reverb control is adequate, up to a certain point where there is a audible buzz that is very annoying when practicing at low volumes.
The Cello (using Micro-Piezo tailpiece pickup)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Before finding this amp, I hadn't found an amp that sounded half decent with my cello. The main problem was not the feedback, which can be eliminated using a custom preamp, but the tone quality. Every other amp I tried had the same horrible, distorted sound that I didn't want. When I tried this amp, with some fiddling with the EQs, I found an EQ that sounded great for clean, solo amplification and one for distorted band performances. With this amp I can plug my cello into the "Low Gain" input jack and boost the EQ's bass up to the max, and my cello sounds almost identical to an electric bass.
The Verdict
-----------------
The conclusion is that this amp is the most versatile I have found on the market today. I strongly reccomend it for guitarists as well as string players that are stuck with the same dilemma that I was a couple of months ago. The only thing I have a complaint about is the price, which at about $300 is pricey. Otherwise, its a great amp.
