Pros: 100% Nutrition in 4 cans daily,Great taste, filling, healthy, for picky eaters...
Cons: So Expensive The Insurance Companies Dont Even Want To Pay For It!...
My little Caleb's lifesupport comes in an 8 ounce can. It's Vanilla,It's Lactose Free,It's A Lifesaver...Literally....
My 5 year old son,who suffers from Sensory Integration Dysfunction, has always been a phenominally picky eater. As an infant,we went through at least 7 different formulas, until he finally weaned onto milk. Milk has always been a problem for Caleb, causing him to behave irratically and obsessive/compulsive. Throughout the years, his diet consisted of Pop Tarts,Fig Newtons,Grahm Crackers,Ritz Bits and Oatmeal Pies. Once he weaned from the bottle,he no longer wanted milk, and drank nothing but Pepsi, and ate only his dry, square carbs.
Last Febuary, after overcoming a few serious childhood viral bugs he caught in school,he became really weak, and stopped eating, stopped drinking, and developed a serious,life-threatening food aversion. His weight of 36 pounds dropped to a dangerous 28,and we rushed him to the local childrens hospital, where he was fed intavaniously with TPN,to save his life. His protien had broken down over a long period of time, and when he got sick with the viral infections/fevers,his electrolyte balance almost bottomed out as well. We were scared to death for him.
Caleb was in the hospital for 3 weeks, where they debated whether or not to do a G-Tube (Feeding Tube),because at this point he still had no appetite, despite medications to increase it...The last resort, was a couple of cans of Ross and Abbott Laboratoties "Pediasure",and a 60 cc (2 ounce) syringe. Hesitant at first,he fought us on this. (He gets the stubborness from my hubby,I think!)A miracle occured, however, and one morning he opened his mouth, and drank the Pediasure from the syringe!
Caleb weighed in at 40 pounds the other day..More than he has ever weighed in his life. His hair is stronger,he behaves, his smile is bright, and he doesnt have as many autistic like behaviors. He is balanced, healthy and whole. He drink 4 cans or 32 ounces of Pedisure a day, still through the 2 ounce sryinge. His diet consist of Keebler Rainbow Colored Vanilla Wafers and round pretzels other than that. Pediasure saved his life.It changed his personality. He is a new kid.physically,mentally,emotionally,socially.
He only drinks the Lactose Free Vanilla with Fiber. His Pediasure comes in a six pack of 8 ounce cans (The only size made to date). Pedisure comes in these other flavors:
Pediasure does warn that it is to be used under a physicians care. It is for children 1-10 years, but not for children under 1. Each can has 237 calories. You can't miss it when shopping:You will find it in the Baby Food/Formula Isle, and has the famous blue bear from Isomil on it.
This product can be used as a supplement for mildly picky junk food junkies,or can save a childs life, when the child refused,or is simply too sick to eat/digest food.
Most stores do not stock this in the back stock room, due to experation date laws. What you see on the shelf is what you get. I learned that the hard way.
Caleb recieved a prescription from the Pediatric Gastronologist who resided over him in the hospital. It was written for 5 cans a day, leading to 25 cases (6 packs) a month. My pharamacy is at Mejier, where they carry Pediasure. After fighting tooth and nail with Medicaid to pay for his prescription (It is over-the-counter,and extremely expensive),it was very hard to obtain the cases,as there is only so many on the shelf at a time. I now have to have it specially ordered,so if your child needs alot of it,you should always stock up when you can.

This is worth every penny, but it can take you for broke if it is your childs only source of nutrition. If that is the case, your child may be eligible for Social Security (SSI) benefits, including, specifically,Medicaid. Your doctor must contact Medicaid prior to your prescription,or it will be denied. WIC (Women,Infant and Child) will also help pay for Pediasure,if the child is under 5. It cost 10.99 and up for a pack of six, 8 ounce cans. More info on Medicaid and Pediasure in your state is available at RossLaboratories.com.You must click on Pedisure, then Medicaid, then your state on the map.It will give you all of the legal information you need to help your child.
