An 85 pound shih tzu?
Well, not exactly. You see I have both a Shih-Tzu (who really weighs in around 10 pounds) and a Rottweiller/Lab mix (we affectionately call her a 'Rott'N Lab') who clocks in around 85 pounds of pure love.
Talk about majorly different pooches, you say? Yep! They are, but they are also best friends. You see, Pu Yi (my shih tzu) believes that he is in fact an 85 pound shih tzu, and that he can take down any rottweiller (Especially our Josie), or large breed dog in site. Not only does he have a big dog attitude in a little body - he wants to be just like his buddy, Josie. Whatever chew toy, food, etc Josie has he wants.
When it comes to chewies we usually end up giving Josie the little one, and Pu the big one because surely they both want what the other one has and end up swapping in the end. However, when it comes to mealtime its a different story.
Feed them in separate dishes? Separate rooms? Separate foods? They'll have nothing of it. This made it challenging when Pu was a puppy and needed special puppy food, and a very small kibble because he was a very small puppy (he fit in my hand!). But now that they are both adults, we've come to a compromise.
Our vet had recommended Pedigree as a better option for dogfood available from your grocery store. Pedigree offers a variety of dry dog foods ranging from small crunchy bites up to a large chunky bites formulas and everything in between. We settled on
Pedigree Mealtime Meaty Chunks and we feed this to both our dogs. In fact, they eat from the same bowl. (Neither overeat and they are both size/weight proportionate so we are able to do this). The kibble on this Mealtime Meaty Chunks is small enough for Pu, my shih tzu, but big enough to satisfy Josie, our Rott'n Lab.
Pedigree Mealtime Meaty Chunks is supplemented with Rice and Vegetables. Not only is it a highly digestible food, its also very nutritious. According to the manufacturer it is "formulated for the growth and maintenance of dogs". I like this food because it contains real rice and vegetables and it does not contain artificial flavors or soy.
If you are not familiar with Pedigree Mealtime Dry foods here is some key information, which helped us choose this brand. Mealtime Meaty Chunks, as well as all their other dry foods, have whats called the PEDIGREE NATURAL BODY DEFENSE SYSTEM. Mealtime Meaty Chunks, as well as all other Pedigree foods, contains ingredients to help dogs coats and skin be healthy, and shiny. Pedigree calls this their PEDIGREE CHAMPION SKIN & COAT SYSTEM.
