Okay, I admit it. I'm not a big egg fan. There are lots of good things to be done with an egg. It's just that I don't particularly like eating plain egg. Whether fried, poached, baked or boiled - I don't really care for the taste of egg by itself. For me, eggs are like flour. They are meant to be an ingredient in a dish. At the point where they are the central feature, I tend to turn my nose up.
That said, cooked eggs can be pretty and decorative. A wedge of properly boiled egg atop a salad adds a lovely contrast. Eggs also lend themselves to gadgets. I suspect most of us who grew up in the US in the 70s remember the square egg maker. It is one of these gadgets that was recently given to me by an aunt who means well, but didn't realize I had a strong aversion to eggs.
Love, however, will win out over tastebuds. I hard boiled a few eggs and took out my gift - a Pedrini egg slicer. To call it just a slicer is to diminish its usefulness by half. The Pedrini egg slicer has two functions. It can either slice eggs or cut them into wedges.
The base of the slicer has two places to lay a shelled hard-boiled egg. The first section allows you to lay an egg down on its side. The second section allows you to stand the egg on its end. A plastic frame is hinged to the base. A row of fine metal wires is strung on the frame so that when the two sections are pushed together, they cut through the egg. If the egg is in lying down section, it will be cut into several thing slices with a yolk in the center and the white surrounding it. If the egg is placed in the second holder, the wires are designed to slice from top to bottom into 6 perfect wedges.
The slicer is very easy to use. It is well made out of high-density plastic and stainless steel. It measures a compact 8"x3.5". Happily, it is dishwasher safe.
Not everyone is as anti-egg as I am. If you are an egg fan, this would be a great tool to have around the house. It would be perfect for someone who likes Salade Nicoise or a Cobb salad.
I tried to make a gelatin mold presentation which featured a fan of egg slices done in this. The egg slices were nice and neat, but the egg yolk spread slightly and bits floated in the gelatin. For any other purposes, however, I suspect it would work beautifully.
The egg slicer could also be used with children playing with clay or playdough. The wires are sharp enough to handle clay without cutting fingers.
If you're an egg person, you'll love this.
