Pros: Adorable and taste good.
Easter is here and so are those adorable little colored Peeps chicks. This particular batch is hot pink and comes in packs of 10 lined up cute little birds, the Peeps chicks. These chicks aren't the most popular color, that would be the yellow chicks. Pink is second in line. Chicks were originally individually hand squeezed out of a tube and hand decorated. Just Born, the company that produces peeps, became the biggest candy company producing marshmellows.
The color does not effect the taste. The color is in the crystal sugar coating so the regular peeps all taste the same other than the mint and chocolate. They are sweet, you get a hit of sugar than the creamy marshmellow. If you let them harden the sugar coating lasts longer in your mouth.
Top hot chocolate or cappucino with a peep, put them on Creme Brulee or pop one on a serving of ice cream. Do not try to toast one, the sugar caramelizes quickly and burns leaving you with a mess. Try putting them in the freezer, very tasty.
You can make Peeps on a stick. Try this, smash them between two graham crackers and have a Peeps S'Mores treat.
Other colors are yellow, lavender, white, orange, green and blue. The colors are colored sugar. Seasonal peeps came out in the 60's.
Peeps are available in Holiday themed versions, Halloween (Witches, Black Cat, Ghosts, Chocolate Mousse Cats, Pumpkins/big and small), Christmas trees, the word "Joy", Gingerbread Men, Peppermint Stars, Reindeer, Snowmen, Spring (tulips), Easter (bunnies, chicks and eggs), Valentine's Day (Hearts both large and small, "I Love You" and Chocolate Teddy Bears).
Flavors:They can be found in Chocolate Mousse, Cocoa, Vanilla Creme, Peppermint, Strawberry, Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate covered and sugar free as well. Peeps come in singletons, 5 per pack, 10 per pack, double packs and are available in most stores and on line. Most of them come in a sleeve style with cellophane wrappers. Look for the after Holiday sales for great bargains if any of them are left. Target goes to 90% off. Actually there are many peeps seasons now but Easter is the main one.
As long as they stay wrapped they stay fresh for quite a long time. Some people prefer them hard or stale. I adore peeps in all their many configurations any day of the year.
The peeps are all fabulous for decorating cakes, Easter basket treats, Trick or Treat bags and Gingerbread houses at the Christmas holidays.
