| shopaholic_man's Full Review: Peet's Coffee & Tea Sumatra |
Ever since I tried a couple of Peet's Coffee beans with my Bunn Coffee maker and Cuisinart Coffee Bean grinder, my morning routine has been more fun and much tastier. Every morning I start my day with a couple delicious cups of coffee, and since I discovered Peet's, it has been one of my favorites. Major Dickason's Blend is readily available at my local Shaws in whole beans, so it is the flavor I get most often. However the other day, at another grocery store, I came across another blend of beans, Peet's Whole Bean Sumatra!
But first let me backtrack a bit;
What is PEET'S?
Peets is a small high end coffee shop that features a variety of exotic and regular coffee brews. Peet's has a heavier aroma than Dunkin Donuts, but not that bleah coffee smell of burnt Seattle coffee beans. I'm not a fan of Starbucks! You will be happy when you buy beans ground or whole from Peet's, you can smell the caffeine!
Now to the Sumatra!
Sumatra blend beans are smooth and delicious. I am not able to purchase Peets coffee beans at my local Shaw's grocery store, so I was pleased to see this at a distant grocer when I stopped to pick some items up. When you can find a store that carries Peet's you may choose ground or whole beans. Since I have my own grinder, I naturally chose the whole beans. They have a deep rich coffee smell, it doesn't have any other flavor apparent in it. Sumatra's flavor was smooth with absolutely no acidy or burned taste. It is not as rich or earthy as the Major Dickinson's and certainly nowhere near as powerful as a Columbian or French Roast. I found the Sumatra to be a light, but rich smooth taste. In a way, this is the closest Peet's has to Dunkin Donuts regular, but with a bit of a richer slightly smoother flavor. I think I would choose the Sumatra as a dinner coffee or when you just aren't in the mood for a stronger kick.
(the following are reprinted from an earlier review with minor revisions covering the same basic background on Peet's)
What is Peet's Secret?
Peet's is a coffee lovers coffee that is certain. It is hand roasted in small batches, and each bag comes with a guarantee that the beans have been roasted within the last 90 days. My only problem is I don't know what date that was exactly.
Value
Peet's is about the same price as Green Mountain and Java offered at Shaws in whole bean, perhaps a bit more expensive. It is usually 9.99 for 12 ounces whereas the other whole beans are 9.99 per pound (thats 16 ounces folks!) I got this 12 ounce bag of Sumatra beans on sale for 7.99 at Roche Brothers Grocery Store. My local Shaw's doesn't carry the Sumatra whole beans. All in all, it is still far cheaper to brew your own coffee than to go out to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts every day.
More Info
You can visit Peet's website at www.peets.com or call them at 1 800 999 2132 They have more than 30 different coffee flavors!
Summary
If you are a coffee lover, and have your own high quality coffee maker and bean grinder, give Peets a try! If you don't have a grinder, get Peet's ground coffee. I'll bet you will be glad you did, it's a great way to wake up!
