Peet's Arabian Mocha Java - Some of the Best Beans on Earth!

Written: Jan 29 '09 (Updated Jan 29 '09)
Pros:Excellent taste, excellent price, fresh roasted beans.
Cons:I wish there was a Peets coffee shop near me.
The Bottom Line: Peets Arabian Mocha-Java has become one of my new favorite coffee beans.

Since I started to buy my coffee directly from Peets to get the freshest roast beans possible, I have experimented with many different flavors not available at my local supermarket. In my home near Boston, there are only six Peets coffee shops, none of them located close to me. I order my coffee online.  This morning I just finished a bag of Peets Arabian Mocha.

What is Peets?

Peets is a coffee company that started at the same time as Starbucks and in the same city of Seattle, Washington. However while Starbucks overroasts their beans, Peets takes care with their beans providing everything from light roasts, half city roasts, full city roasts and double roasts.  I am well aware that many people enjoy the double roasted flavor of Starbucks, but I find that you don't get to experience the true flavor of the beans, but instead find that Starbucks coffee always tastes bitter.   Peets has many stores throughout the country although not nearly as many as Starbucks nation wide or Dunkin' Donuts in my local New England area. However, they also sell many of their most popular beans and ground coffees through grocery stores and all of their blends and beans online.  When order online, Peets ships the coffee the day they roast the beans.

What is Arabian Mocha-Java?

This is a coffee blend, the beans don't all come from the same location.  The mocha coffee beans come from Yemen and the Java beans come from Indonesia.  Mocha-Java is probably the most famous coffee blend.  Keep in mind that the mocha used in this is in fact a COFFEE Bean, not a Chocolate Bean.  In fact, when chocolate beans were first tasted, it reminded Europeans of the flavor of Yemen mocha coffee beans, thus the association of the word mocha with chocholate.  According to Peets website, it is one of their top selling coffee blends.

Preparation

I ordered the beans as part of a sampler pack. I store my coffee in a dark dry area. When I am ready to drink some coffee, I put two table spoons of beans in for each full sized (12 ounce) cup I want. I usually use four to six spoons for 2-3 cups of coffee. Most of the world considers 6 ounces as one cup. I ground the beans in a Breville Burr Bean grinder, and then I made the coffee in a Bunn Coffee Maker. Sometimes I prepare the beans in a Bodum French Press which actually brings out a bit richer flavor from the beans. When I use the French press, I grind the beans to a courser grind.

The Taste

I have added Arabian Mocha-Java to my list of absolute favorites. I enjoyed this blend better than the much pricier Jamaican Blue Hills and Panama Esmerelda Estate coffee.  The taste is smooth and delicious, and has chocolately overtones, although it is not too sweet. There is no bitter aftertaste, this coffee is smooth and rich tasting.  When I ordered this coffee, it was part of a sampler package with several others.  I know this one was my favorite, because it was the first bag to become completely empty. (Which is why I realized that I had to write my review with the last couple cups).  Whether I made it in my coffee maker or French press, this coffee is delicious.

Price

At only $12.95 a pound, it is a very affordable coffee, competitive even with supermarket blends. (Keep in mind that many coffees on the shelves are actually 10 or 12 ounce bags, not a full 16 ounces). You can order Arabian Mocha Java beans fresh roasted from Peets coffee at peets.com.  Peets ships their coffee beans the day they roast them. You can also order it ground.

Summary

Excellent taste, excellent price, fresh roasted bean delivery, I can think of no reason not to give Peets Arabian Mocha-Java beans five stars.
