A love/hate story - Prima Pappa high chair

Written: Aug 30 '01 (Updated Oct 01 '01)
Pros:Height adjustment, reclining, large tray, wheels, very comfortable, sturdy.
Cons:hard to clean, seat cover doesnt last.
The Bottom Line: Excellent, versatile and easy to use. But expect to pay for a replacement seat cover.

We bought this high chair when my daughter started on solids at around 6 months, so we have owned it now for a year.
I have a love/hate relationship with my Prima Pappa. Like any new relationship, it was all wonderful to begin with....

Love at first sight?:

I noticed the Prima Pappa at the store...well, it's a bit hard to miss really. The unique and stylish design makes it stand out from the crowd. This high chair does it all: It folds for storage, it reclines to four positions, the height adjusts to 7 positions, it has wheels with brakes, a 5 point safety harness, ultra comfy seat and a stable design.
I was a bit concerned at the high price, but after getting it home I was convinced the price was worth it.

Moving in together:

My daughter loved the chair, it is very comfortable. The seat is thickly padded all around, kind of like a car seat. The tray was a little high for her at first, but she soon grew into it. I also doubt that she will grow out of it in a hurry. The straps are very adjustable, the tray can be removed (with one hand!) to help get a larger child in and out, and the seat is generously large.

The honeymoon period:

The Prima Pappa worked wonderfully for us for a long time.
I could roll it out to the terrace for breakfast, pop my daughter in with some toys or paints using the semi-reclined position, adjust it to the height of our table, flip the tray up when not in use to save space in the kitchen. I am still in awe of what this chair can do!
The bonus for me, is that my daughter would SLEEP in this chair. My daughter was not a napper, until we got this chair. Then she began to fall asleep after lunch and dinner every time. We have also given it a lot of use as our 'last resort' when she wouldnt sleep or woke up at night. It worked every time, just pop her in with a snack or a bottle, tilt the seat back and BINGO!

For people with back problems: the seat can be lowered to about a foot off the floor, allowing an older child to climb in themselves (as mine does - even at full height!) or so that you can squat (the best position for lifting) and lift the child just off the floor and into the chair.

The 7 heights allows you to feed a younger child in a position that is comfortable for YOU as well as baby. The lowest setting allows me to sit on the floor, low stool or step. A little higher for our lounge chairs. Higher for our kitchen chairs. I like the fact that I can adjust it so that she is on the same level as everyone else, and that I can move it easily to where ever we are. I feel that my daughter is a part of the meal, not set aside like other chairs tend to do.

I feel that this is a safe chair. It is very sturdy, it would take a LOT to tip it. My (heavy) daughter likes to climb up the chair and swing on it (mostly because its not allowed) and shes never tipped it. Everything locks into place and none of the mechanisms are within the childs reach. The 5 point safety harness is easy for adults to do up and undo, but hard for little hands. My daughter can remove, undo, open or break nearly every 'safety' product we have (the cupboard latches didnt last five minutes! but thats another review) but she hasnt managed to undo these straps yet. The newer model now features a safety bar that goes between babys legs. The harness also goes between the legs, but the bar is good in case you forget the straps or if baby decides to make an escape attempt before you get the straps done up. We have forgotten the straps (bad, bad parents!) a couple of times, but my daughter was either so comfy she didnt want to escape or she couldnt manage to.

*UPDATE* I stated above that 'none of the mechanisms are within the childs reach'. Well, my daughter is now tall enough (about 80cm) that she can reach the spring-loaded handle for the tray with her feet and release it. So far she hasnt managed to push the tray off, but she can slide it out. This would only be a safety problem if I forgot to do up the straps and wasnt watching her. There is no substitute for supervision! I still feel this is a very safe highchair.

It turns sour (or is that moldy?):

Dont get me wrong, I still love my Prima Pappa. But we had to make some changes or it would have been out the door with it!
I only had two minor concerns with this chair. The first is that the wheels can stick sometimes (usually due to a piece of dropped food getting stuck in the wheels). Not a major concern, just a small annoyance.
The other is that the seat cover is very hard to clean. It has crevices that the food gets into. I would have to remove the cover every time to wipe it properly.

After some months of carefree feeding, playing and sleeping, I began to notice an unpleasant odor. I traced this odor to the seat cover. The 'washable' cover is filled with a foam material and water had gotten in (around the domes which attach it to the seat and a small hole I found in the vinyl). Around the same time the vinyl started to split on one side, allowing more water, juice and food to get in...and never come out.
I never did manage to get rid of this smell and have since stopped using the seat cover. At the moment I am using a folded up towel, which is actually an improvement! Not as comfy, but I can just pick it up and throw it in the wash after a messy meal. I believe that replacement seat covers are available for around $30. I'll get around to it one day :)
I do think that such a well designed, not to mention pricey, chair should have a much better designed seat cover. The chair, Im sure, will last for many years but the seat cover lasted less than a year. Perhaps the slightly more expensive leatherette cover would have held up better.

Happily ever after:

So, its not a perfect relationship. But its as close as you'll get. I still love my Prima Pappa (minus stinky seat cover) and so does my daughter. Its still as good looking as the day we met, and still the most versatile chair I've seen. If I could give it 4 and a half stars I would.
