I was planning a trip a couple months ago to attend a training class on some new equipment I was going to have to support at the company I work for. I knew I was going to need a scanner of some sort to be able to make copies of documents and other things.

I did a little research online to find a decent portable scanner that was going to do what I needed and still be small enough to fit in my luggage. I came across this scanner and after looking at several of the reviews posted about it, I decided to give it a shot.
After you are finished reading this review you will have enough knowledge to make an informed decision on whether or not it is for you.
Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner
The ultra portable pass through scanner gets its power from the USB port meaning that you don't have to lug around a bulky AC power adapter to plug it in. It weighs in at lightweight 12 ounces and yet it is powerful enough to scan documents up 8.5" x 14" documents with really high quality results.
The key to its size and weight is the scanning technology built in; CIS (Contact Image Sensor). With this technology it uses less power than your typical desktop flat bed scanner. The document is pulled through acrossed the fixed sensor and sent out the other side. It also scans much faster than your typical flat bed scanner.
Despite the small size you do not loose as much scanning capapbilities as you would think. It not going to give you as high a quality as you would expect from a high end desktop scanner, 600 dpi (dots per inch) optical resolution gives you a very nice quality replication of the original document on the go. It includes 4 separate scan modes; 48-bit internally, 24-bit true color, 8-bit gray scale, 1-bit bi-level black and white.
I found that Pentax included everything I needed after opening the box and pulled out all of the contents. It included the scanner, 3ft USB cable, ( a bit short) installation guide, user's manual and software CD. The CD includes the drivers needed to operate the scanner on your PC running Windows (XP, 2000, ME and SE). It also includes drivers for Mac OSX 10.3 and later.
My final thoughts
I have to say that I was really impressed with how well the Pentax DSmobile 600 scanner worked for me. Right out of the box it did exactly what I needed it to do. The setup was extremely simple using the USB cable and loading the driver from the CD on to my laptop.
Since I was on a business trip I needed to keep track of all of my expenses including receipts and other documents and organize them so I can turn it in when I returned. Thanks to the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software included on the CD I was able to scan the receipts and use the necessary data to fill out my paperwork.
Though I did not use it to scan full color photos, I was able to scan business cards and other multiple color documents and it did very well with all of them. So with that in mind, if you are looking for a portable scanner for a up coming business trip and needing a scanner, the Pentax DSmobile 600 scanner is one you need to check out.
