I own a S2 pro and needed a carry everywhere in the pocket camera. The first was the very good Sony U20 which gave good results. But I traded it in for the Optio-S because I wanted a little more resolution at the same size with a zoom lens. But the Optio has been a mild disappointment - despite being at the cutting edge, I frankly got better pics from the Sony U20 - they were sharper and less noisy - although one must admit that the fixed lens of the U20 makes for less hand movement blur. Added to this, I think other 3.2 MP cameras deliver better images than the Optio. Finally, despite it's pretty looks and metal casing, the Optio seems pretty fragile, prone to scratching, and the lens, once opened, wobbled aound when I cleaned it very gently. I was disappointed, a little, I must admit.
It's hard to find a good carry anywhere substitute for the Fuji S2 pro - but a few days ago, I got rid of the Optio and I think I have at last found the perfect keeper for me - at least - the Olypus Stylus 300 - tough, resistant, fast, good images and a perfect pocket travelling companion. So, while I did like many aspects of the Optio, I was not sorry to see it go. Your reviews, as always, are well written, sound and interesting.

My father test his new lenses with an interesting idea.

He has sheet after sheet of US $0.01 stamps on a board and takes pictures at different distances (he uses this to check the lens for distortion).

Might be useful when you have a company trying to stuff a lens into a credit card.

Howard,
I've handled the Optio a few times. I've often considered it as a pocket camera with similar duties to my always-with-me Elph Jr. film camera -- something tiny but at hand. While the Elph delivers amazingly sharp photos, your review on the Optio agrees with other reviews in saying that the sharpness is lacking. What good is a camera of any size if it doesn't perform optically?

A great review again. Your field experience is always an enjoyable read. Reading it and those in other posts always make me with I was away from the PC and out on the trails. Good going.

today while watching The Belmont stakes...I said to my husband that taking pictures of the charactors at a race track would probably be a terrific photo opportunity then they interviewed one of the jockeys and he was the quintessential jockey..a great Photo op..LOL

Anyway, another great review, thanks once again and sorry if I rambled

Here I thought it was a verb meaning to play up. I hope you didn't cross your fingers while playing James Bond, Howard. That might explain the grainy pictures. ;-))
