| Freak369's Full Review: Pentel Data Checker Highlighters Data Checker High... |
When it comes to highlighters you either want something that is going to stay somewhat neutral or completely pop off the page, there's no real in between with them. One of the main reasons why I picked up the Pentel Data checker was so that I could use it without having it roll off my drafting table. Sure, there is a lip at the bottom of the edge but when I have the table raised on the third level, it will only catch so many things before everything that's in the lip falls out. The large chisel point doesnt wear do not matter how much you use it or how right you are when you are using it, another perk to the tip is that you can highlight an entire sentence in one stroke. No going over the sentence a few times and ending up with warped or runny text. The yellow is one of the middle of the road colors; the purple is the one that is the tamest and the orange the loudest. I won't say that this is neon in color but it certainly isn't something that you are going to be able to ignore when you highlight something with it.
Pentel Chisel Point Yellow Data Checker
Since this has a little wider than normal tip to it, it is the perfect pick for students that want to highlight text in notebooks; this is not erasable so make sure you are highlighting the right area and that you don't have to hand the book back in at the end of the term. You can use this on almost any type of ink including gel pens but some type of pencil lead will smear. If this happens make sure that you get the lead off the point before you try and use it again or you will end up with a mess. To remove the lead [or any ink that may be absorbed by the tip] just rub it on a coarse piece of paper for a few seconds until you see nothing but yellow. You can use this on almost any type of paper but if you use it on anything with a glossy finish chances are it will smear off if you don't give it an adequate amount of drying time. This isn't "milky" ink so it won't show up on darker colored papers so if that is why you are buying it, you are going to be disappointed.
One of the many things that I really like about this is the cap; it's large and oversized compared to most others and it lets off a nice distinct click when you apply the cap to the barrel. I hate markers and highlights that don't have that 'click' because you never really know if it's sealed or not. Because the barrel is flat you can lay it down on your desk or art table without the fear that it is going to roll around or get lost under some mystery stack of paper. Since highlighters have a felt tip to them, if they come in contact with anything the ink is going to start to flow and if you lose track of a regular highlighter for a couple of minutes and it comes in contact with something, you could have a mess and a half on your hands. So far I have never had a cap break or crack and the pocket clip that is built into it is nice if you want to have it attached to a loop in an art case or backpack.
You can find these at most office supply stores like Staples and Office Depot; if you get them when the back to school sales are going on you can pick them up for about $1.25. The usual selling price is in the $1.75 price range which isnt a lot when you consider the amount of use that you are going to get from it and the amount of space that it can cover in one single pass. If yellow isnt your signature color you can also get these in pink, green [more like a lime than a green really] and purple. There are other colors in the Data Checker series but they aren't 'basics' colors so they are a little harder to find in retail shops. In my opinion this is one of the best highlighters to pick if you want something that you are going to be able to count on every single time you go to use it. You do need to recap it when you are done or the tip will dry out but that is a given with highlighters.
The Bottom Line
So far I have had nothing but great luck with this highlighter as well as the others in the Data Checker series. They have a long life, will write on almost any type of paper and the ink doesnt fade after a few weeks. For the price you are getting something that is going to last at least one school term and is going to provide you with a solid color, nice chisel tip and more than adequate coverage. Pentel may be known for their pens and automatic pencils but the Data Checker series has really impressed me. Even the brood, as picky as they may be about markers and highlighters, have grabbed this one on more than a few occasions but you'd never see them using any of the other colors in the series. If it isnt a screaming neon color or something manly, there's no way they'll ever use it.
As always, thanks for the visit
