| ladyconsumer's Full Review: Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Pretzel Thins Savor... |
I'm always on the lookout for a delicious, crispy snack that's not fried. After all, potato chips are wonderful for the taste buds, but not so good for the hips. And plain old pretzels are just dull, as far as I'm concerned. But I recently discovered the Pepperidge Farms Baked Naturals line of snacks. A whole line of crackers, sticks, and pretzel thins in various flavors. In this case, I'm referring to their Pretzel Thins in the Savory Cheddar flavor.
What's a pretzel thin? Well, it's what you get when you mix a cracker and a pretzel. It's flat, like a cracker. But they're shaped the way a traditional hot pretzel is shaped - like a knot, but with three loops. Each one is nearly 2.5" wide and about 1.5" tall. The flatness is the only trait inherited from the cracker. The flavor and texture are definitely "pretzel". In this case, they're dusted with a mixture of powdered cheddar cheese, salt, and other seasonings such as onion, garlic, parsley, and sesame seeds.
Actually, they're not so much "dusted" with this mixture as "heavily coated". That is to say, there's a LOT of seasoning on these snacks. I happen to really like them this way, as they're quite flavorful. But I can well imagine others saying that they're far too salty or heavily seasoned. You certainly can't accuse them of skimping on the flavor! My husband and I both consider these to be "delicious". They're very crispy, providing a satisfying crunch. And they smell wonderful, with an aroma similar to a pizza place - with all that cheese, and all the seasonings.
So are these a fairly healthy snack, like most pretzels are? Well, they're not too bad, but they're not the best, either. A serving is considered 11 crisps, or 1.1 oz. That's not a bad serving size given that these crisps are fairly large. The serving contains 140 calories, 3g of fat, 340 mg of sodium, 1g of fiber, and 2g of sugar. This is a bit fattier than a standard (unflavored) pretzel. But far better than a potato chip. So it all depends what you would be eating instead of these, when you look at nutrition. Since regular pretzels don't thrill me, I'd likely reach for the chips if I didn't have these around. Still, if you enjoy regular pretzels, you'd be better off sticking to those for fewer calories and far less fat.
The 6 oz. box costs around $3.50 in my local grocery store. I like them for a snack that's not too bad in terms of fat and calories. See www.bakednaturals.com for more info.
