| jmjh02's Full Review: Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Counting Board Books |
Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Counting Fun Book by Barbara Barbieri McGrath, is a fun and delicious way to practice counting and fine motor skills.
This sturdy board book has bright colorful pictures on each of the 14 pages. There is one line, of dark black text at the top of each page, with the right side page giving the direction for that page. Each page has the number of goldfish, or goldfish indentations, on that page in bright yellow. Each page depicts an underwater scene. My 2 year old daughter's favorite page is the page for the number 2 which has a picture of a mermaid on it.
We find the easiest way to enjoy this book is to pour a bowl of the regular size goldfish crackers, not the giant ones, and sit at our kitchen table. As my daughter and I together turn the pages, I read the text, and we count the goldfish together. On the left hand side page there is a picture of the correct number of goldfish for the page, but on the right hand side page there are indentations for your child to place the goldfish to match the number for that page. Placing the goldfish in the indentations is great for practicing fine motor skills. When we began reading this book a year ago, my daughter, then a little over 1, needed a lot of help getting the goldfish in the correct spot. Along with counting the goldfish on each page, my daughter and I talk about what else she sees in each picture.
If you are looking for a storybook, this is not the book for you. Each set of two pages, has a short one line of text that rhyme. For example, the first set of pages say, "In the castle Goldfish play. Count them as they swim away!" The book continues in the same fashion, except the rest of the pages all have a number, 1 through 10.
My daughter really enjoys this book, and lately has been asking to read it, using the goldfish of course, several times a day. My 4 year old son also enjoys the book, just not as much as his sister. This book is great for a quiet time activity, and we have used it successfully when eating out and at church to keep both my son and daughter quiet and entertained.
We hope you enjoy this book as much as we do. We also enjoy the Goldfish Fun Book which is also by Barbara McGrath.
