Pepsi Natural
From you effervescent friends at PepsiCo another broadside at the ever increasing "Green" market; this one in a cola form and retro glass bottle.
For those of you who may recall the mid-1990's "Pepsi Clear" you may be skeptical of the staying power of this product. However, putting the novelty aside, this is definitely a product to try and then fill the pantry with.
TASTE: 9. I'm a long drinker of Pepsi - as a Kid in the midwest it served as my gateway drug to Jolt, Starbucks, Espresso. Due to the IV of coffee that hangs from my side at work, I don't usually drink Pepsi anymore. Even in the summer if I want a cold drink I'll go for an iced coffee. That said, I really appreciated the subtle cola but almost "dark brown" sugar taste of this drink. It's not as sugary as straight Pepsi, which I think is a good thing. Definitely almost a root beer taste as well.
Color: A little more brown and luminous that the regular darker regular Pepsi.
DIET? Non-Caffeinated? Nope, at least not available at my local chain store, nor any mention this option on Pepsi's website.
PRICE: Introductory price of $0.99 for a pack of four bottles at the local chain market. It was displayed in a nice end of aisle display - who moved the Heineken's Betty? Since this price will probably go up, I'd guess it would be a bit more than the regular Pepsi line - and well worth it.
GREEN? NATURAL? Well, if natural means fewer scientific sounding ingredients is natural, I guess so. Organic? No. Earth friendly? Hard to say - I hope that Pepsi puts some real effort in buying sustainable products for this "natural" brand, but other than simplified ingredient list, I couldn't find any true accounting for it's Earth friendly nature.
SERVING RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. Over Ice; drink after mowing the lawn in 90 degree heat.
2. Over Ice; fill glass 1/2 full with Rum; top off with Pepsi Clear. Better than Rum and Coke! But don't try Rum and Regular Pepsi - yuk.
Ingredients: SPARKLING WATER, SUGAR, NATURAL APPLE EXTRACT (COLOR), CARAMEL COLOR, CITRIC ACID, CAFFEINE, ACACIA GUM, TARTARIC ACID, LACTIC ACID, NATURAL FLAVOR, KOLA NUT EXTRACT
Caffeine Content: 38 mg. Regular Pepsi is 25 mg; so bonus points for the extra kick.
Mad Men connection? Was PepsiCo's introduction of Pepsi Natural meant to coincide with the Emmy Award winning Season 3 of Mad Men? Fans of the show learned about the failed Pepsi "Patio" product that was geared towards women in the 1960s. Maybe Pepsi wanted some interesting brand recognition, that would drive interest in this product? Anyway, from what i've seen of the ad campaign, Pepsi could use a little more Don Draper magic in promoting this fine product.
