A couple of weeks ago, I had a rather unfortunate meal from Trader Joe's,which rendered the usually buoyant toiletoctopus to the depths of depravity of which I never want to return. Without getting too graphic, stomach pains and diarrhea were the words of the day, as I suffered from eating obviously tainted mussels in one of their seafood soups. It was a brutal experience, and I lost several pounds, which might have been a good thing in "hindsight." Just last week I suffered from heartburn, due to the fine folks at a local pizzeria. I don't blame them, but the tomato sauce dropped a disco stick on my plans for that night. There was no sleep, as I kept waking up due to the discomfort, and reached for my pink friend once again to provide guidance.
That's right, Pepto Bismol. It has always been a fixture in my house, and due to already having a "Dodge" stomach instead of a "Lexus", I've had to depend on it fairly regularly. This pink liquid isn't going to win any "Taster's Choice" awards, as the flavor is unique, and quite medicinal. It reminds me a lot of Teaberry Gum, and it takes more than a spoonful of sugar for me to get it down. I just don't like the flavor, as its chalky tasting, and the pink color isn't going to be confused for a favorite treat anytime soon. The consistency of the liquid is thick, which makes it even more repulsive, and it goes down your throat with a cold temperature that's unique to it.
The taste is gross, but the reason I use it regularly, is that it works well. Within 1/2 an hour it gets rid of any heartburn, which I'm suffering from more as I get older. In fact, after a lot of spicy meals, I've actually drank it to be preemptive, if the food was eaten before bed time. It's actually kept my stomach acids from churning all night long, and has helped me get a well deserved night of sleep. It was great for my episode with the pizza, and this formula coats your stomach. It might take a half hour to get rid of heartburn completely, but it does give you some relief quickly. That alone is worth the price of admission, and dealing with the rather icky taste.
For diarrhea, its the best medicine out there. You have to worry about dehydration with this serious condition, and along with a bland diet, the Pepto works to get rid of it. With diarrhea, you aren't going to get instant relief, but within two-three hours, I've noticed the Pepto greatly decreasing this rather unsavory predicament. The only thing that might trip you out, is the black stools caused by this formula. However, that's a walk in the park compared to suffering from diarrhea. I've had a little more than the instructions say to take, without any adverse affects, other than male pattern balding and a belly that's creeping over my belt buckle again. Pepto works for gas as well. That can be painful, and while its often the "butt of jokes" that I appreciate, you don't want the stomach pain. You can drink this medicine during flare ups, and it decreases the severity of gas in less than an hour. In this way, Pepto is the "Swiss Army knife" of medicines, as it can treat a lot of different conditions. Due to this, I always have it in the medicine chest, and if half way out I always buy a new bottle of it. You can get a generic brand for a bit cheaper, but as someone who likes what works during these terrible times, I stick with what works. A 12 oz bottle at $5.99 is a fine value when it resolves these problems.
The active ingredient, and the black stool creator is Bismuth Subsaliyclate. Adults and children over twelve can take 2 tbsp every 1/2 to hour, but you aren't supposed to take more than eight doses daily. If conditions worsen, or if the diarrhea lasts for more than two days, you'll need to contact a physician. Thankfully I haven't suffered from that long of ordeal, which might feel like 40 days and forty nights, but for short term use this product does what it promises to do. Sure the taste might not be that appetizing, but neither is diarrhea, gas, or heartburn. Get rid of that by drinking some Pepto, as its a time tested product that delivers results.
