"Nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea.
Yay, Pepto-Bismol."
Now that I've gotten that off my chest (and into everyone's heads), I can continue.
Recently, I came to accept something that was quite obvious - I'm getting older and the things that I used to be able to eat at say 18 or 19 I can't exactly eat at 29 and get away with it. That realization literally hit me in the gut not too long ago and I definitely paid for it.
It was a few weeks ago and I had some pizza. Right after I took my last bite, I started to feel the pain in my chest and started belching. Oh my goodness, I thought I was going to die. I think at one point, I re-enacted the commercial - I went from grabbing my stomach to my chest to my mouth to other areas, in a 5-second time span. Well, after watching me make a fool of myself and whine about the pain for half an hour, my fiancé finally said, "Would you take the Pepto already?"
This is where Pepto-Bismol enters the picture.
About the Product
Pepto-Bismol comes in a 230mL triangle-shaped plastic bottle that is filled with that all too familiar pink liquid. On the front of the bottle it has Pepto-Bismol written in yellow. It boasts "Protective Coating Action" and a big "P" in the background. It also has a diagram of the liquid as it makes its way toward the stomach, coating the way as it goes down. Directly under the "P" is says: "Sugar-Free. Fast, soothing relief for heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea." It comes with a convenient measuring cup for easy dosage and the protective childproof cap tops off the bottle.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol is: Bismuth Subsalicylate (1.76 mg/mL). Other ingredients include sodium and saccharin.
Directions for Use
This is taken from the bottle:
Shake well before using.
Adults: 30mL (2 tablespoons); Children 10-14 years: 15mL (3 teaspoons); 5-9 years: 7.5mL (1 1/2 teaspoons; 2-4 years: 5mL (1 teaspoon). Under 2 years, use as directed by a physician.
Repeat above dosage every 1/2-hour as needed to a maximum of 8 doses in a 24-hour period. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, which may accompany diarrhea.
My Experiences
I'll be honest with you, I hate taking certain medicines. I tried my best to avoid taking Pepto-Bismol because it just looked too chalky and further more, it's pink which is not one of my favorite colors. I was like a spoiled, annoying 2-year old refusing to take her medicine.
Let me take you through the encounter. I start to complain about heartburn and I'm also belching up a storm. I'm also whining on top of all this and being a real pain in the butt. My fiancé gets tired of hearing my mouth and goes for the Pepto. He brings it over to me and pours the thick liquid in front of me. "Ugh," I say. He puts the cup in my hand and says, "Drink it." This is where I become the annoying 2-year old.
Me: "Uh-uh - I'm not drinking this."
Him: "Will you just drink it."
Me (Whining): "But honey, it smells like paste."
Him: "DRINK IT!!!!"
Me: "I DON'T WANT TO!!!!"
Him: "You better drink this."
Me: "I DON'T WANT TO!!!!"
Him: "DRINK IT!!!!"
Me: "OK"
Me: (GULP) - "Ugh"; "Bleah"
Him: "Oh grow up."
For the most part, this is what we go through when I'm about to take the Pepto. Putting my childish attitude aside, this stuff works really well. I personally don't like the chalky taste as it's going down, but I do get immediate relief and I'm back to my annoying self once again. The first time I did try it was right after we picked some up from the pharmacy, so it was nice and warm and really gross. I find that it tastes a little better if it is chilled in the fridge. Within a half-hour my heartburn is gone and I feel much better.
There are a few cautions and warnings that should be followed and consult a physician if the symptoms get worse. One warning that was interesting states that "children and teenagers who have or are recovering from the chicken pox or flu should not use this medicine to treat vomiting or nausea."

As always, be sure to keep this and other medicines out of reach of children.
Final Thoughts
Putting my childish attitude aside, I have to say that Pepto-Bismol does what it needs to and gets the job done fast. For the most part, once I take the required dosage, I am able to go on with my day or sleep soundly at night. Pepto works wonders.
Thanks for reading.
