| mmcphee's Full Review: Pepto-Bismol Original Formula Liquid |
I thought I was dying. Ive never been as sick as I was this past weekend. About midnight, apparently concerned about the sounds emanating from our bathroom, my husband brought me the only stomach thing remedy we had in the house a big bottle of the pink stuff, Pepto-Bismol Original Formula
The Basics
Pepto-Bismol comes in an 8 oz, 12 oz and 16 oz bottles. The thick pink liquid has a light peppermint flavor. The active ingredient is Bismuth Subsalicylate indicated for the relief of heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, nausea and diarrhea. For adults and children over the age 12 two tablespoons can be taken every 30 - 60 minutes, not to exceed 8 doses in 24 hours. A dosing cup is included with the bottle for accurate measuring.
My Experience
Ive never been a fan of liquid medications. I think Pepto-Bismol has to be the worst Ive ever taken. The peppermint flavor isnt too bad, but the texture is so thick it is gagging. When you have an upset stomach the last you thing you want to take is something that is going to make you gag. The marketing for Pepto-Bismol entices you into believing that the thick medicine is working in part but coating and soothing your stomach. Well it coats my mouth, the back of my throat and then I start to gag.
I tried 3 doses each about an hour apart on that night, hoping that I would be able to get something down and it might relieve any of my symptoms. Before the medicine could reach my stomach my gag reflex would kick in. So I suffered until my body finally rid itself of what every microscopic creepy-crawly was causing my agony.
Final Thoughts
If you cant get the medicine down how can it help you? Pepto-Bismol is just too thick for me to get down especially when I am feeling at my worst. My husband swears by Pepto-Bismol, which is why we have it in the house but it isnt the stomach remedy for me!
