"You can always rely on the bottle of pink stuff", my Mom would always tell us kids. Anytime we had a tummy ache, out came the Pepto-Bismol & we were given a couple of teaspoons & in no time felt better. I can't ever remember not having a bottle of Pepto-Bismol in our home, and when I moved out on my own Pepto-Bismol became part of my medicine cabinet as well.
So what is Pepto-Bismol used for, what symptoms can it relieve?
Pepto-Bismol is an over the counter product used to provide relief for the following symptoms:
Upset stomach
Indigestion
Heartburn
Diarrhea
Nausea
The active ingredient is Bismuth subsalicylate & the product contains many inactive ingredients. The point I want to stress up front about this product is while it contains no aspirin, this product is not safe to be used by those who are allergic to aspirin. Aspirin is a form of salicylate, & some of the other salicylates Pepto-Bismol does contain, may cause an adverse reaction to those allergic to aspirin. There are also several other factors that should be considered before using this product on yourself or your children. I won't bore you with copying all the specific warnings & precautions from the bottle, but I do stress to you to read these before use to see if this product is designed to be used for your particular case & most importantly, safely!
My primary usage of Pepto-Bismol is when I am stricken with a bad stomach ache or nausea. I use the initial recommended dosage of 2 tablespoons for adults and repeat if my symptoms have not been relieved. This product allows for a repeated dosage every 1/2 hour to 1 hour (if needed) & up to a maximum dosage of 8 doses in a 24 hr. period. I would estimate about half the time one dosage relieves my symptoms within 10 minutes, while the other half of the time I have to take an additional dosage. I have never had to take more then 2 doses for it to be effective on me for any one occasion.
Pepto-Bismol has a taste all it's own, and one that I have become used to. It is a very thick liquid and has a light minty taste and when I am really in pain, I welcome it & it tastes down right good! I can instantly feel it coating my stomach after swallowing it, and I know it is only a matter of minutes before relief is on it's way. I prefer Pepto-Bismol to Tums or Rolaids, neither of which I enjoy taking because of the gritty feeling in my mouth having to chew them up and the taste seems to linger on & on.
While I only use Pepto-Bismol after I already have my symptoms, this product is ideal for those prone to heartburn or an upset stomach due to certain types of food. This can be taken before or after meals, to ward off those symptoms. It can also be taken with or without water and still be 100% effective.
Pepto-Bismol is available in many forms, the Original Formula Liquid, Maximum Strength Liquid, unflavored caplets, original & cherry flavored tablets; and all are available in different packaged quantities. Any form can be used effectively for occasional bouts of the various symptoms, but if you are experiencing any symptoms that are consistent on a daily basis for any ongoing prolonged periods; you should seek consult from your physician because you may have a more serious complication.
Two other points about this product. Pepto-Bismol is not an antacid, therefore does not neutralize acid in the stomach like other products. The way this product can help relieve Diarrhea is it reduces the accumulation of fluid in the intestine that can cause diarrhea. This being said, this product may not be effective for you if you need a product that does neutralize acid. Also, for children, my recommendation would be to use this product for Diarrhea only for the first 24 hrs. and with as much water as the child will take.
Diarrhea can lead to dehydration & in children this is a very serious matter. If the symptoms have not ceased during the first 24 hrs., please take your child to his/her pediatrician for the best advice for the child. I do not have children of my own, but was with my sister and one of her daughters years ago, (in the hospital) when the child suffered from dehydration & was throwing up nothing but bile. This is not a pleasant experience, for the poor little child or the loved ones; so please take extra precautions with your children & monitor them closely. :*)
Overall I have been very pleased with the results I have received from taking Pepto-Bismol at the first sign of a stomach attack. It makes me feel better in minutes & I have never had any side effects from the product. I have never used any other form except the original liquid, because it has always been effective for me, and as I stated in a previous epinion; I am not good with taking pills. I prefer any liquid medication over pills when I can get it.
I think Pepto-Bismol is an ideal multi-purpose product. It has many uses, is available in many forms, & can be used on those as young as 3 years old. So based on my own personal experience, that this product is manufactured by a well known company (Proctor & Gamble), & that Pepto-Bismol has been around since the early 1900's providing relief for millions of people; I am happy with my choice!
Note: As with any OTC medicine, the best advice I can give to you in regards to children; is to consult with your physician first, before administering the product.
